With Dry July coming up in Australia I decided to participate again. A month of sobriety to kick start the writing of the feature film I'm working on for my script writing class sounded like a good idea.

Anyway, it's now Dry July and I've not drunk any alcohol really for the past month. The writing is flying, which is good. But just like last year when I did Dry July I've ended up with a urinary tract infection.

Now I've got to drink 2 litres of Cranberry Juice and I hate the stuff. It's awful.

So I was wondering, what "home remedies" do you use when you sick? And do any of them ever taste good?

You can buy cranberry Extract capsules which are said to be effective. Blueberries are said to be effective as well. Probiotic capsules Increase the number of good bacteria which fight infection.

I don't know if they have it in Australia, but here we have a smoothie in a bottle. The brand is "Naked". To drink cranberry juice, I buy their mix called "The Blue Machine", and mix it about 3 parts "Blue Machine" and 2 parts cranberry. The blueberry in the smoothie is so strong I can't even taste the cranberry any more.

Another thing I do is get yogurt and/or milk with the healthy bacteria in them, and eat/drink about eight ounces a day. The good bacteria are supposed to help drive out the bad ones.

A trick I don't really recommend, though it's fairly effective, is loading up on salt. Extremely salty urine is devastating to anything along the way -- but depending on your health in general, it can be more harm than good.

With a UTI, then I would be drinking lots of water with an antibiotic.

If that doesn't work, then over to beer.

So...you're saying not drinking alcohol gave you a urinary tract infection? How so?

Go to sauna (not sex sauna) afew hours a day and drink alot of water until you get well.
I never catch a cold or flu since .... :)

 sobriety doesn't cause a UTI, nor did the fact it's Dry July. It just happens I've had one within a month of quitting drinking both times I've done Dry July.

Considering the volume of booze I usually consume, it's probably my body flushing toxins then anything else. I'm waiting for the gout to turn up, that usually occurs round about now each year too.

And thanks for the tips. I'll give them a go.

As a side note... Take note

I am a strong advocate that being sober very much limits the creative flow. In fact in music you can't hardly if at all name one artist throughout time whose best work was done dry. I don't give a shit who or genra.
For instance a good example in hard rock , AOL from the 70's to now would be Aerosmith. The question is often asked which do you like better drugged out Aerosmith or sober Areosmith. It isn't even close drugged out wins in all rock polls by margins that politicians would get a hard on if they could get.
So I am saying fuck dry July and make it a wet month, like winter spent her

Oh I've taken note backagain. I've been doing The Artists Way recently and examining why I do the things I do. Now that I've figured out what I'm trying to hide from with the booze, I've decided that frankly unless it's a social activity, I'm not drinking. Even at social activities I'm not all that fussed.

I've spent most of June without a drink in my hand. That's pretty good for me. And I'm no longer drinking at home alone - which was what I did on weekends mostly - instead I'm writing. It's not been as hard as I thought to be honest. I guess the fact I only ever drank once a week is a bonus. I don't drink during the week, only on a Friday or Saturday and never on both days.

I may have gotten close to a problem - I'm surprised given the depression years ago I didn't end up a raging alcoholic - but I don't think I'm an alcoholic. I do think though that I'm a binge drinker and that's probably just as bad quite frankly if not worse.

So....

First, make milkshakes:

low-sugar ice cream plus bio-activated yogurt, total volume 1 liter
'NAKED' BLue machine & cranberry juice, total volume 1/2 liter
half teaspoon of salt
tablespoon of ginger

mix and chill. drink while in hot sauna, as fast as possible without brain freeze. when finished, exit sauna directly into pool at 15 C.

swim 50 meters. exit and go directly to warm room. consume 1 liter green tea.

repeat as necessary.

I figured that Counter, but it wasn't the only post in the thread asking how quitting drinking could lead to a UTI so I thought I'd make my post clearer, just in case others had a more serious reaction to what I'd written.

Whisky is my home remedy. It usually sorts out what ails me. And if it doesn't, I'm too pissed to notice. ..|
