I think people just look for reasons to yell racism these days.. If you really understand what that word means you would know that it simply means putting another race beneath your own. That did not occur here.

Half of the this thread is predatory and presumptuous. Chance wants some culture, what's the harm? I'm from the South and it rare that people reach out. Well, it's electronic, but still ;)

I want an Indian friend. Never had the pleasure of befriending one. Sue me.
 
PLUS, the dude is in Greece! Culture is complex and for an non US native it not crystal clear. Hell, anthropology and sociology are legitimate fields because of how complex it is.

I doubt anyone here could break down the racial and ethnic differences in Greece with the same precision everyone seems to expect from the OP.

"They seem nice" Thanks, I'd like to think we are nice as a racial group. Obviously everyone is different, but until you get to know someone, you only have public opinion and perception to judge..
 
I'm black and I'd be your friend. I gotta warn you though, I'm not one of those fun-loving, wise-cracking black guys that you see in the movies and such. Being friends with me is basically like being friends with a white guy, except I play more basketball and have the pent-up bitterness of being a double minority in a straight-dominated, white-man dominated country.

And is anybody else wondering what the quotes around "friend" are for? Is this guy really just looking for an f-buddy? Cuz if so, I'm totally down for that too. :-)

Are you being for serious? :eek: If you are, these generalizations have to stop. The only thing black people might share is skin color, and even that varies. This conversation is getting too deep for me if we have to define the word black next.

Black people do not share all of those things or any of those things, for people who believe otherwise. Stereotypically, of course, those are many of the perceptions about black people, but they just aren't [universally] true.

Two problems with "African-American"

1. Africa is a continent not a country-That continent supports many different ethnic backgrounds

2. I was born in this country, why am I considered a hyphenated American?
 
If I may step into the debate here, there most definitely is black culture just as sure as there's gay culture. Even though I'm black and gay, I don't really fit comfortably into either one. But that doesn't mean that those cultures don't exist. The idea of any culture is necessarily a generalization, as no large group of people is completely homogeneous. Try defining American culture and you'll invariably find plenty of Americans who don't really fit that definition. That doesn't there's no such thing as American culture, though.

The "black" vs "african-american" debate is semantic vomit, and you all should be ashamed of yourselves for dredging that bullshit up again.

Yes, I agree that there is a distinct African American culture in the United States, composed of those black people who are descendants of African slaves. And there is a telltale "blaccent" that I can certainly detect among even the most siddity negros trying to "class-up" themselves. They know who they are and I know them too.

In my black social and professional networking circles, I deal with these pretenders constantly.

To the extent that we deny and minmize our uniqueness, we seem to suggest that there is some shame or embarrassment in not being exactly like whites and asians. Black folks really are different, and Black Americans with slave ancestors are in a class by themselves.

Chile, when they let us out of hell they changed the locks!
 
Gee guys it seems like some of you are going on like somone touched a raw nerve.

What actually is an african american anyway? I mean like do you actually have to be black to be able to be an african american, or do you have to come from africa, or can you be white or indian if you want to. Cos i am a white african, so im also wondering what a white american is called? are white americans maybe called european americans, or dont they get to have a continent named after them. And do you think that african americans deserve to be called african if they were not born in africa, have never been to africa, and probably will never get to go to africa.

Could i maybe call myself an american african even though i wasnt born in america, have never been to america, and probably will never go to america. Hey thats quite cool, black people from america are african americans and white people from africa are american africans. Yeah. Now i remains to be seen what white people from america and black people from africa could be called.

And then of course there is the bit about racism. Can only white people be racists or can any colour people be racist. And if only white people can be racist then are all other coloured people automatically anti-racist. And the other thing id like to know, is what would you call a person who called a white person a honky or some other derogatory name like umlungu or abelungu. Would they be racist or would they be anti-racist.

It all seems so confusing to me, this stuff about colours and continents and all the furore it stirs up.
