Yeah, what ronboy is saying is what my Latin and South American friends say---for some it is a statement of pride and nationalism---and also to educate the average USA person who they think have no sense of history.

The United States does not have a name to identify our citizens that incorporates the name of our country, so we are simply referred to as "Americans." (United Statesers doesn't work too well...).

But Teach, we are The United States of America. To the south is Estados Unidos Mexicanos (The United Mexican States.) We do have a demonym that incorporates the name of our country. American. "United Statesers" would be to general and that's not the name of our country anyway.

^I dont think he is arguing that you aren't Americans, rather that you aren't the only ones.

And I'm arguing that we are the only ones. We are the only ones. The rest need a qualifier. West Virginians are not considered Virginians because they are not part of Virginia. Canada is not part of America, but it is part of North America, so they are considered North Americans. Not Americans.

Now what about Greenland? Geographically is it part of America?

^Uhmmm... good question. Is it part of Canada?

Which is probably why, when asked where we're from, we usually name a state(overly patriotic excluded), unless we're out of the country. One of the many countries in... America.

I'm having an argument with a friend and I need as many responses as possible.

The question, Which countries are in America?

Don't cheat by reading other answers please ;)

For me: All the countries in North America, Central America, and South America.

But in the ego-centric view of many "United Statesians"...it is exclusively the United States. ;)

The continent you live on is called america, that's an irrefutable fact, everyone who lives there must be an American.

Canada, United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Panama, Guatemala, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Columbia, Paraguay...probably forgot some....

EDIT: ..I just read the rest of the thread now....didn't want to cheat...North, Central and South America are The Americas....

Actually the LAND MASS we occupy is called America. It is divided into two continents called North and South America. There is no continent called America.

Greenland is a territory of Denmark if I'm not mistaken

The continent I live on is called North America. There is no continent, country or anything named simply America.

It is not ego-centric to refer to our country as America. No more so than Mexicans referring to their country as such.

The landmass is referred to as "The Americas"

I'm guessing you mean America as the New World.

Probably more in the Caribbean than the mainland...

^That depends where you come from, In most English speaking countries it is taught as landmass, in most Spanish speaking countries it is taught as a single continent. It's all a matter of perspective, and in the end which nomenclature you choose is moot to the fact that continent or landmass, its called America.

The whole problem comes down to there not being a name.

What name goes in the second line, describing their countries' inhabitants?

Canadians

---------------- ?

Mexicans

(some older people over here say 'Yanks') ;)

There are many different views on how many continents there are. Traditionally, there are seven, but by some definitions there are as few as four (America, Eurasia/Africa, Oceania, Antarctica).

In the sense that you are referring to people from the Americas you're right.

I'm expecting cat fights in this thread.
If no cat fights, i would be very disappointed.
