Dad said "Son your fucking high!" and left the conversation at that....

Really? I mean, why can't I have a serious discussion about possibly joining the military. I'm sure there are benefits and disadvantages( ie Death being the biggest).

Anyone else even once thought about the joining the military?

Go for it dude. You're an adult. You're capable of making your own decisions. Sometimes you have to do what you think is best for you.

I'm more of a "peace, love and understanding" kind of guy though, so I never once thought about joining. It always seemed kind of silly to me.

Yes, I've given it a lot of thought off and on for the last year or so.

Agreed, ultimately I will be making the choice, but at this time I'm just thinking about my options at the moment.

No, but I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to join the military. Don't feel hurt by what your dad said. ^.^

I spent six years in the Navy. This was the best decision I had ever made. I wish I had stayed in and made it my career, but I got out after my enlistment was up. I would be retired now, but instead, I am looking for another job in this lousy economy.

If you get seriously hurt/disabled, you're pretty much looking at poverty and government assistance for the rest of your life.

There are those who work their way up the ranks for so long, then decide to take on civilian life to find they wind up essentially starting over again.

And even moreso, you would be giving the best years of your life watching your friends die for capitalist assholes

If neither of these things scare you, then by all means join the governments ethnic cleansing program... er' military..

I rather be homless or in Jail.

Seriously Duigi Luigi,

(and that's a tough gig for me to play)

Google USCG and read about what SERVICE

goes beyond playing with guns or in the mud.

Chill people...that was not a DISS on the other

Services...just a bookmark for an inquiring mind.

75% of you don't even know what the Coast Guard

really is...hint, ask a seal or a jarhead, they can tell

a few stories about the Shallow Water Sailors.

i would never ever ever. but I'm glad that there are people that do go out and do it... but i don't like the situation...

how about this... support the solider not the war!

I enlisted about 2 years ago and plan on doing a full 20 and then retiring.

Best decision I made.

Well this is how I see it.
All forms of patriotism/nationalism are really silly...and I think even the fact that countries exist, with magical
invisible lines called borders, and different color flags which mark "nations", is ridiculous.
Not to mention fucking annoying, because if you fall in love with a country, you need to get a work visa...and that shit
expires, then you have to leave...and even if you get to stay, it can take a long time to gain citizenship.

Also all wars are even sillier, with many rights and wrongs on "each side".
So I'd say risking your life in that way is really wrong.

I hate learning about idiotic historical events, and people saying things like "Germany did this", "Russia" did this...it's like everybody in that area called Russia did whatever action they were talking about, with full knowledge of what they were doing...you know...it's insane.

Luckily today the western countries are pretty ok. We don't see anything dumb(as far as I know) like a western country threatening to go to war with another western country...because we've become a lot smarter over the years.

I'm trying to imagine myself in war....it's just too retarded I can't...no offense to the mentally challenged.
How am I supposed to shoot at random men I don't even know? Because "my" president says I should...yeah...no thanks.

But you know I'm a compassionate little boy...and I respect everyone who thought that them going to war actually makes a positive difference...it's not their fault they were brainwashed...I don't care if somebody has low IQ, the most important thing is being a good person.

Thanks for the posts everyone! I do appreciate all the views. I guess I should have made my original post clearer. I am not considering the military just so I can blow shit up and kill. I am considering it as a career option at this point in my life. If or when I do sign up and if or when I do go to war then I'll deal with it. I'm running out of options, so I need to make a decision.

I think it's great that your at least thinking about it. Itake it your dad wasn't in the military. You need to find someone you respect that was in the military, that can give you the straight truth about it, because your right there is good and bad, bad being not you dying but seeing your buddies die.

^^

Were you just listening to this, PenisKontrolliertMich?

His post was inane, hippie psychobabble. Why don't we all hug one another, make daisy chains and sing kumbayah. Please don't equate that shit to John Lennon.

Some people need to wake up and realize this is the real world.

I thought about joining the military my senior year in high school and ultimately decided not to go.

Other than facing the possibility of Death, my dad( who was in the military for 4 years) said there was a lot of stress and pressure. That there was one guy in one of his friend's squad who was basically bullied by their commanding officer and eventually committed suicide. The terrains were sometimes difficult, but traveling was a plus according to him. He said there was an incident where his squad was abusing some citizens somewhere and when he refused to do what they were doing, they basically shut him out. None of them would talk to him or anything. They'd screw around with him( to make a spectacle of him) but that was it. He had to spend a year on a mountain with them, I couldn't imagine the isolation.

Also I have a friend who did decide to go ahead and enlist in the military and although he felt confident after the training. He's scared out of his mind because he was randomly assigned to a mobile unit in Afghanistan and he was originally told that he'd be working on helicopters or something.

Stated like a true American, and as such go "be all that you can be", I say. ..|

How about just not shoot at each other? It's not that hard.
The "real world" can't ever have world peace? It already does dummy, the western part of it. It's inevitable. One day the third world countries with really low average IQ will become like the west.
