So, since we haven't heard from our Favourite Aussie Lifeguard and friend in awhile, and I've just received a couple of e-mails from another friend who is also traveling, I thought I would share HIS comments to me - He's a Kiwi, and I think the reason I'm sharing his travels will become clear in a moment . . .

Hello from the Gold Coast
Hi,
I've just come home from spending the day in Surfers Paradise. The Wax Museum was ok. Got plenty of photos but thought the admittance price was a bit overpriced for what was there to see. I got to see the Celebrities and Historical Figures and made it halfway through the Tourtures and Dungeon Guided tour before my vision blurred and I felt faint. I believe it was because there was hardly any fresh air going through.

After having a glass of water and a few minutes in the fresh air, I moved on to have a wander around the shopping malls and came across a place called Infinity. Its room after room of Mirrors and Laser lights within a maze-like structure, with a glow in the dark aspect too. I really enjoyed it. Would be cool to have one in New Zealand somewhere.
I also spent a couple of hours at Ripley's Believe It Or Not. Quite a nice arrangement of weird and quirky things.

Saturday was spent at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary where I took a few photo's before realising my camera wasn't charged. I later found out that I'd left the battery charger behind too.

My friends decided to show me round so we went for a wander around Coolangatta where we all had a pie from a bakery (and
i had a few sweets too). I'm not much of a pie fan but these were very nice.

We had a drive around and stopped at a surf life saving club just to wander along the beach. There were a whole heap of padlocks chained to the fence. No explanation for it but they all had couples names and dates inscribed on them so they must've been anniversaries of people.

Yesterday (Sunday) I did absolutely nothing. My friends were going out with some of their friends for lunch and invited me to come too if I wanted. We all had a pub meal and then went to the RSL for a coffee. Pretty quiet day really.

I am yet to go to Dracula's and the Theme Parks and I think that's what I'll do tomorrow because I've only got 3 days left here with my friends before I head to Brisbane.

Then, today:
Spent yesterday at Movieworld. I reckon it's been the best day since I started my holiday. Had an awesome time!

First time on a roller-coaster wasn't too bad. Started with the Scooby-Doo one because that's supposedly a tame one. Definitely took me by surprise when we started going backwards for a short bit. Came away with a fair bit of Scooby-Doo merchandise. haha. He's my favourite. Would've loved a photo with the Mystery Inc gang but my camera is dead and I've left the charger in NZ (could've used my cellphone camera ...but couldn't find it. Later found out it was hiding in my bag, tucked in my rainjacket i'd taken just in case).

Definitely should've gotten a photo with Catwoman cos she's HOT!! but by the time I'd found a working ATM, she'd snuck off elsewhere.

After all the fun Ii've had over the past few days, including today being the best, I don't think I wanna come home!

Just had a look at tickets for Draculas (Cabaret themed 3 course dinner. Dinner and a show sort of thing) and they're $93 per person. Was planning on going Saturday night but turns out both Saturday and Sunday are sold out. Might have to leave it until next time I'm here and book in advance.

Got nothing planned for today but who cares. I'M. ON. HOLIDAY.!! Who knows, I might even get a bit of writing done. :P

I though his "Tourist's Eye View" of the Gold Coast was appropriate, since it's where Taz was before he started off on his world tour.
We now return you to our regularly scheduled program - if the guys send us an update!

Haha thanks dq. I have been a bit lazy but that's because the last week was a bit of a blur. Short story is we left vietnam for a pitstop in Sydney. And then we flew to bogota where I got an amazing reception from my friends family. I have altitude sickness at the moment so staring at screens for too long isn't pleasant. I'll try flesh out the details later. :) and upload a few more pics from my adventures.

sexy!

So where in America is the little devil?
Have you chained up in your basement DQ?

Ok so last update was from Bangkok, I'm well out of Asia now. I have been in Bogota for the past two weeks, but I'll keep going from where I left off.

We left Bangkok early in the morning to the view of the sun rising, and arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam a couple of hours later. We cleared immigration and made our way to our hotel in the city in the old quarter. It was really cool, tiny little side streets, scooters everywhere. It was like a maze. Then after navigation several aggressive tour salesman I found a little old Australian woman in a tour booth. Apparently she was filling in for her friend who ran the place, she was really friendly and helped us book a tour to Halong Bay as well as recommending several restaurants and things to see in the surrounding area.

The next day we set out on the 4 hour bus ride to Halong Bay, where we met the rest of the people that would be joingin us on our cruise, including a couple of hot french guys, and a hot Norwegian hahaha. We got there and boarded our boat and started our trip into Halong Bay.

It is one of the most beautiful places I have even seen. It is literally a maze of islands, each one breathtakingly beautiful. They rose up out of the water like ancient monoliths, their limestone cliffs weeping water and giving them depth and texture. We passed countless caves and strange rock formations. We got the chance to get out and explore some, both by foot, swimming, kyak, and bike. We spent on night on the boat in the bay, surrounded by other boats all lit up under a glowing moon (Said to be the eye of the halong bay dragon) It was really beautiful, and unfortunately my crappy camera doesn't quite capture it. We spent the second night on the largest island in Halong bay, which is surrounded by floating towns (which are littered throughout the bay everywhere). It's said that some of them live and die on the water, without ever setting foot on dry land, and those that do, are prone to the opposite effect of seasickness.

It was a really amazing experience, and it would take faaaar to long to go into great detail, so I hope the pictures speak a little for me.

Anyway after we returned from out trip to Halong, we flew to Ho Chi Minh city or Saigon as many still know it. We spent a few days there risking our life crossing the roads through the thousands of scooter who held absolutely no regard for any for of traffic laws haha. It was exhilarating and terrifying all at once. We also spent some time visiting The re-unification palace of the Vietnam war, left preserved exactly as it was the day the south surrendered. It was really cool exploring the tunnels underneath the palace filled with tactical maps and communication equipment. We also visited the War museum, which told the story of just how awful the Vietnam war was, from things like photos of USA war crimes, to the effects of Agent orange. We did have a bit of fun in one section where newspaper clippings from war protests around the world trying to find our countries. Australia was there, but Colimbia was nowhere to be seen.

After some more exploring of the city, markets, and food we packed our bags and prepared for the long flight home.

Well, well, well.
If it isn't HE Himself actually posting in HIS thread with an update, lol.

Welcome back to a more regular appearance, Taz.

Great pics and write up. We're all very grateful that you are sharing some of your world adventure.

(Got any from last night?!)

ElmosToe,
Taz and his friend are exploring South America at the moment - I should be so lucky as to have them visiting me.
I have just been fortunate enough to get a PM response back now and again, or happen to find a post that was germane to this thread in other locales.

Taz, did you go and see Angkor Wat?

angkor-wat-temples-of-angkor_06_498.jpg

I've heard a lot about it. It's supposed to be really impressive and one of the most visited sites in Southeast Asia, but they say it's badly needing conservation work and protecting, and that it's getting threatened by mass tourism and over-development.

Anyway, back to topic....

As the official geographical chronicler of this voyage, it's time for me to give an update to my previous post #58 about Taz's route. Wish I could do one of those animations you see in movies with a line moving across a map.

No matter. Here we go.
