Iceland is planning to ban online porn

they might as well just shut the internet off, what else is there to do on the web? I thought the internet was invented to disseminate porn to the masses.

THat's how I feel too. It's not like there isn't a plethora of child-monitoring/child-restricting programs parents have available to them assuming they even want to give their kids unmonitored access to the WWW anyway. It's the same thing that makes me mad about the videogame argument, these things have warnings on the labels, who is giving 11 year olds the $50 to go to the store with, or whose credit card are they using to purchase the games online? The parents. Don't blame the friggin videogames.

I will group this with the general particularly US-based cultural hysteria about everything even tangentially sexual : if Janet Jackson's left breast is a danger to us all , if your President can be impeached for doing something sexual with a 22-year old woman , " violent porn" is obviously more dangerous .

One of my friends is an Icelander, and although he totally looks at tons of porn and doesn't care, he says the Icelandic powers-that-be take themselves way too seriously. Sounds like he's right.

Once again the perception of religion on JUB is so skewed as to be oblique to reality. Icelanders are overwhelmingly Lutheran in profession, but little of anything institutional in practice (very few are attenders) and are therefore termed nominal.

The idea that only conservative movements oppose pornography is an imputation that is not nor has not been accurate, either in Iceland or elsewhere. Most social progressives, like feminists, absolutely oppose pornography and the objectifying of women (the vast, vast majority of porn is heterosexual of course, along with the demographics.) Then there is the tendency of it to drift into pederast pandering, as it so often does on JUB with the posting of pictures of underage subjects or certainly the appearance of subjects who intentionally appear underage.

That other causes are more important probably gives the impression that the Left is supportive of porn. Whereas many on the Left would not want or bother to attempt censoring porn, to portray them as pro-pornography is a distortion and just wishful thinking.

Social conservatives and religious conservatives may embody many undesirable values where gays are concerned, but they are not some enclave of opposition to pornography: a lot of the Left shares the view that it is not a positive influence in society, and for many, it has nothing to do with religion.

Oh no...;)

And that happens when you have a female PM  Surely she is joking.

No. Sad to say, this is what happens when you have a lesbian as Prime Minister.

They have no sense of ha ha.

I still want to know what the heck qualifies as "violent porn" and how the heck they have "found in studies" that kids are "acting it out"? Really?

How do they know it's from watching porn, and not from watching Jersey Shore, or MTV ???

Whoah there buddy. Only one person suggested that before your post as far as I can see. And in plenty of countries conservatism and religion are not always related.

It says here that this is a proposal by Iceland's more conservative politicians. they're just discussing it.

According to some Icelandic politicians,....

While some researchers .....

Remember, Mitt Romney made a pledge to censor internet porn and Rick Santorum wanted to ban it also. And there were people in this forum who supported these two. Iceland has nothing on American right wing politicians.

My current leader claims to be a socialist but she's banning porn as well. See post 23. She just loves 'Social Engineering'.

What you linked to is Northern Territory National Emergency Response Act of 2007
