  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

If A + B = C

Do you really think Chris Rock could find the correct answer to this question?

Would that not depend on the purpose?

I was thinking about the old If a + b = c then b + a = c.

If you put your shoes on before you put on your socks, you don't seem to get the same result as when you put your socks on before your shoes.

I got thrown out of my high school algebra class for asking about that.

So much for the theory that math can define everything. Thank you my friend, you are one in a million!

Ham salad is for lunch!
But its dinner time!

BTW, thank you everyone for getting us to 2 pages already. How many more pages can we get? Maybe D more?

Even though I was somewhat joking earlier with making up an equation for D, the true answer I feel is that "There is not enough information to determine the answer to the question".

If that would be a choice on an SAT, I would pick that.

We simply do not know the values of each of the variables, and we do not know for certain if there is any particular sequential order to them.

That's easy. Just have to use a trig identity and then u-substitution. Done.

@topic: D=:D (spaced version: D = : D )
I like it! Another creative answer! ..| But, no. Not the right one (you got the left one)

Actually, all the information needed to answer the question is available, right IN the thread. (Ooh! another hint.)

naw man that goofball ruined it,

its in bloody ruins mate........ i love these british shows.
That joke was ruined from the moment it was originated.

Well I must say, 2 people have gotten the correct answer. Anybody care to give it one last try before I publicize the answer?

The next letter?

D is the 4th letter in the alphabet.

I tried for simplicity...lol

Here are the two correct answers. D is indeed the next letter, making it the fourth letter in the alphabet.

For those of you who couldn't figure it out, my condolences. In your attempt to prove yourselves intellectually superior, you attempted to overthink the question, thereby stumping yourselves. :p

:=D::=D::=D::=D:

This thread has served its purpose, goodnight.

If you were really condemned for making that question, then I really feel that the education system needs to be reformed.

If someone were to ask me that question in class, this would be my respond:

Putting your socks on, and putting your shoes on are different from addition of two variables.

In mathematical terms, they can be expressed in the composition of two functions (with time as the x variable) however.

Let

f(x) = putting your socks, and g(x) = putting your shoes on

f(g(x)) is indeed different from g(f(x)) ;)

If equality means existence of a set called the alphabet and using alphabetical progression(A is followed by B etc) then B + C = D however since A + B = C then we have following that A +2B = D so uniqueness is violated so D is not determinate.

However if you diregard alphabetical progression D is uniquely indeterminate and outside of the original set which is itself unique and unmapped...

There are many other treatments(quantitative, numerical or otherwise) to answer this question but there really isn't any point in going into them here.

The short answer is that you would need parameters to get a single answer so in the most dumbed down answer one can say "need more information" an that covers it.

Oh and one other thing too---- you can't cheat by associating the definition of D (4th letter of the alphabet because the original statement is conditional. Gotcha. if ..isn't the same as asking "what is D?" now if you said "If A is the first letter, B the second, C the third, what is D.." then you could do that.

Those who speak of the "right" answer are off because morality here has not been defined for the terms involved.

As far as "the correct" answer ...there are many of them here...2 are outlined above...

Nice try Willie - it beats the usual thread!!!!!!!

You're try was actually an interesting attempt, but proves nothing. The correct answer is indeed this: D is the next letter in the alphabet. No matter how much you attempt to over analyze the situation in an attempt to make yourself feel intelligent, it doesn't work. All that over analyzing just gives you a sore anus! :p
