  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

if prison is free, why basic healthy isn't free ?

I was thinking mass production of cheap doctors :)

All they need is basic health skills, not that hard, all the nurses already got the skills.

You really like talking out of your ass, don't you?

Prison shouldn't be free. They should seize all a prisoner's assets. If there is anything left over if/when they are released, then give them a refund. Every prisoner should have some kind of job to do. If they're too crazy or violent to work, those people should be at the head of the line for execution.

Prisoners do get jobs and when/if they are released and get one, their wages are garnished.

It's called restitution. I received a check from the state garnishment of a drug addict who rammed my car, along with others, in a parking lot, was released and went back to work.

Let's face it, nothing is free. You either pay for it yourself or the state (ie everyone else) pays for it on your behalf. The issue for each different "service" is where you draw the line.

It is free for the criminals.
Why it isn't free for the non criminals ?

Some older homeless people in Japan do crimes like stealing things from shop to get into prison cuz there will be roof over their head, meal 3 times a day and all other stuffs.

Sad.

I suggest the homeless and the sick should do that too.
Steal things from the shop until they get caught.

Lets stop with the silly stuff boys. Tellie asks a reasonable question and for those of you that have to go a...b...c...d... maybe you should skip his threads and posts lest the challenge become to great for you.

As to free, he is talking about the recipient not the service.. Society pays and pays and pays. Kiwi, yours was a cheap shot and unworthy of youor your intellect.

Raven, congrats on admitting that our little Ozzyite is smarter than his entries may appear on the surface.

Even a sad 1/2 ass jokester like me can take a post and figure it out (most of the time) with just a minor bit of cogitating...oops, forgot that isn't allowed in some circles.

As I understand it, that's only to pay damages to their victims. I mean seizing everything they own as well as making them work in prison to recover the cost of running one.

Every prison should have one or more industries, such as license plates, denim clothing, and other things that we've heard about. Every prison documentary I've seen says working is an option or a privilege -- I think it should be mandatory.

But that doesn't change the fact that the healthcare is still free in a prison.

But working Americans have to pay out of their own pocket (or at least more and more of them do). It's totally job dependent.

The question he's asking is: Does that make sense?

And the obvious answer is: No.

I don't know about other countries, but failing to provide prison inmates with health care in the U.S. would violate the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. The general public isn't entitled to this health care simply because they aren't being punished. But I doubt they'd want it anyway, because generally speaking, prisoners aren't provided with anything that resembles quality care.

Here's just one example: "One inmate, identified in the report only by prison number, "had a hernia for four months the size of a grapefruit before he was finally sent for a surgical appointment."

Because Americans have been trained to think government = bad, free enterprise = good. No matter what. Despite the fact that people almost universally hate their cell phone company, hate any "customer service" (Indian call centers anyone?) provided by private companies, and hate how the record companies and cable companies have monopolies and screw over their customers. Oh, but we are told that private enterprise is always good. *sigh*

The thing is, each has its place. We don't want private entities running our water supply and we really don't want for-profit insurance.

But some people are too stupid or set in their ways to see that health care should be free.

Nobody should go bankrupt trying to be healthy.
The government is the most incompetent provider of them all. A private company may put me on the phone with an Indian I can barely understand, but at least they answer the phone! Have you ever tried calling a government office? From the DMV to the State Department, you get a machine and it's impossible to talk to a real person.

Private companies are also accountable for their money. The government just "loses" billions and no one has to answer for where it went.

More specifically to the point of government health care, have you ever heard of the VA? How they screw our vets over and give them the runaround when they try to get treatment? Then there's the whole Walter Reed Army Hospital scandal.

The government can fuck up a wet dream, and does on a regular basis. There's a reason people are "trained" to think the government is bad, it's because they have been around a while and have seen example after example of it.

Ron, that is one example cited to make a point and obscure an issue. Reality is like my relative that has worked at Folsom Prison for years. He is an RN. with a bunch of other letters after it and he can go on for EVER telling how the prison health care system actually works and he doesn't have to sell any papers or a book or point of view doing it.

I never said the government should provide health care. They should provide insurance.

Secondly, I can provide far worse examples of private industry gone bad: Enron, Bear Stearns, and, well, y'know, the whole reason we're in this mess now: The financial industry.

Government has the ultimate accountability: Your vote.

When cellular providers all have the same phone plans/rates, you don't really have a choice. It's fake competition. You can't vote them out of existence.

An educated and engaged electorate is our best hope.

RE: " that is one example cited"

That's why I prefaced my comment with, "Generally speaking," because I know there's exceptions to everything. :) A relative of mine spent over six years in the prison systems of two different states, and I heard a lot of horror stories from him about the health care that was provided to inmates in both states.

It does make one ponder why a prison inmate can receive free healthcare unlike a good person who has been laid off from their job in a city where there are no jobs that pay enough to make healthcare affordable.

Excellent point! ..|

See the above post #36. :D

Whether it's direct health care, insurance, or whatever, they are substandard at every turn. They raid Social Security for god's sake. What makes you think they won't do it to the funds allotted for health insurance?

I've heard many arguments about how the government was responsible for the financial crash, from both sides of the political spectrum: Not enough regulation letting the banks become "too big to fail", the government forcing banks to make loans to people who couldn't afford them, the Fed keeping interest rates too low for too long, and on and on.

Oh, I see. The government is responsible for everything bad, and nothing good.

Gotcha.
