  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

I'm confused about the new Karate Kid movie

because they are in China he is being taught Kung fu

and the movie is called The Karate Kid because the other kids tease him by calling him the karate kid.

hope this explains it

I think the biggest question should be why are they remaking The Karate Kid in the first place? Have we run out of ideas already?

Because Will Smith wanted to launch his son's acting career.[-X If memory serves me, and it usually does I remember reading that Will Smith was completely behind the idea of doing this remake.[-X

As a screenwriting student, I will admit that if my agent approached me with the opportunity to write the script for a Karate Kid remake, I wouldn't blink before agreeing to do it.

Especially if Jackie Chan and lil Will were going to be in it. Work is just too scarce.

The way I see it, remakes bring classics to a whole new generation who may never even considering taking a look at the original. Now 1 more kid might look back and check out the old one.

Not to say it will be a good movie, by any means. Hollywood's getting weird. Thank god for Judd Apatow.

Hollywood and it's habit of remaking things irks me no end. I saw an ad for Death at a funeral the other day and I thought "hang on, that's a british film that's about 3 years old. Why are they remaking it already"

I'll stick to the original of that, I've never laughed so hard in my whole life.

Yeahh, I'll agree with you there! Wow, and I remember when I saw the British one, I heard THAT was a remake! I know it didn't do very well, but I'm SURE it'll be better than the Chris Rock b.s. it's being re-remade into.

WTF HW? At least give it ten years for cripe's sake.

Let's see, last year...

Friday the 13th remake
Dragonball movie
Land of the Lost movie
G.I. Joe movie
Astro Boy movie

This year...

Clash of the Titans remake
A-Team Movie
Marmaduke movie
Nightmare on Elm Street Remake
Yogi Bear movie

Next year...

The Smurfs movie

I think Hollywood was out of ideas a long time ago, and that list doesn't include shitty movies and sequels that shouldn't have been made.

They made money before, so why not this time. Cheap and easy with no thought. And they already bought the rights. It's cheap!!! ..|

I don't think the problem is that Hollywood is out of ideas. I think the people greenlighting projects are just too greedy and chickenshit (or they just don't know what the hell they're doing) and so they have to stick to properties that already have a built-in fanbase or a history of selling.

Because Will Smith wanted to launch his son's acting career.

And I read that, as one of the producers, Will was a royal pain in the mikta.

One other thing. The trailers are on television now and is it my imagination or has the spelling in the title been changed to Karate Kyd?

As noted above it has nothing to do with creativity...Hollywood is swarming with creative people, it's just that remakes, book/video game adaptations, comic book films...they're financially safe because they're guaranteed to bring in ridiculous amounts of cash. So why not run with it from a financial perspective? It's a money game, that's all.

Plus pretty much all of the decent cinema the past decade came out of Europe, not Hollywood. *shrugs*

There's a remake of Karate Kid?

*plays the game*

Why, then, is Hollywood remaking movies which bombed the first time around?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/film-news/7580357/Hollywood-remaking-film-flops.html

And there have been plenty of remakes which flopped. We could start a list and spend weeks contributing to it. Heck, we could spend days on Will Farrell alone!

Because the technology now exists to make all of those 'flops' flashy and successful. If you have a pretty picture people will watch, no matter how shitty the movie is...example: Avatar.

Incidentally, all of the films in that article are science fiction, action and fantasy save for Overboard...which was an okay movie released at a bad time. I'm also inclined to believe the reporter there is a tool...since all of the films listed (except Red Sonja and Dune) made back their budgets, with Red Dawn nearly 8:1. They are not complete financial failures. Critically, perhaps...but no one cares about critical acclaim if you're making money. That's for the independent circuit.

I saw a clip yesterday and it's already PAINFULLY obvious that this movie is merely a vehicle for Will's son's acting career. He was nowhere near believable, and it actually looked kinda creepy to see Jackie Chan with the creepy mustache flailing around with a scrawny child who looks like he's been sleeping on a train his whole life.

one da increidible doofus movies ever made ans it continue

da movie companys got bes real boring little twats out play school or audience alls got lobotomy or both

Jackie Chan run fast ya cannnnnnnn

No, technically, The Pursuit of Happiness was the vehicle for Jaden's career--he performed astoundingly in that role. As for Will, he is just playing the same Hollywood game that many other successful (or not-so-successful) producers/fathers-of-kid-prodigies have played before his time ..| Don't knock him for merely participating in what is already set in motion

Also, you mention Jaden doesn't look "believable", whatever that is supposed to mean??? But for what it's worth....Will's son was actually required to learn martial arts and spent months (if not a whole year) training and preparing for this role....now THAT's dedication and "believability"!!!!!!

Why do they keep making these films, you ask?

Because we (as a people) keep going to see them.

Isn't that pretty obvious by now?
