  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

I'm confused about the new Karate Kid movie

You listed two (so-called) singers and compared them to an author and an actor....that doesn't equate....the music studio can perform miracles with your voice....but a video camera can't perfom miracles with your acting skills and a printing press can't perform miracles with your creative writing...either you have it or you don't. Those who have it are still prevalent (i.e. Will Smith, Stephen King, Samuel L. Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Sandra Bullock); those who don't are done (i.e. Christopher Knight, Lindsay Lohan, Ed Furlong, Brandon Lee)

You need "e.g.", not "i.e.", when giving examples. "I.e." is for when you're defining or identifying something.

That philosophy is why crap keeps getting churned out, and why I don't forsee it stopping anytime soon. Too few hold the entertainment industry to a standard. People keep going to see recycled garbage because it's just something to fill a couple of hours. It doesn't matter if it's bad, as long as you're distracted.

People hold the entertainment industry to exactly the standard it's supposed to meet: it entertains.

And everyone would do well to remember there have always been craptastic movies. Movies of bygone eras seem better because only the outstanding examples are well remembered.

Gdsx...and all

I have a present for you guys.... :D

Today Show interview with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith

I'm sorry...I just don't like the kid. He seems like he's going to be a little cocky, arrogant (insert whatever you like here), who thinks he's the shit when he hasn't even really put in any work. He's annoying...

What's your problem? He seemed like a kid.

The thing the creators of this remake forgot is that for the movie to work you have to sympathize with the kid, not be so irritated that you want to slap the shit out of him yourself.

That principle is quite true.

There's going to be an earthquake today or something just as monumental....I totally agree with you, JonesHere! This remake appears to lack any charisma. This kid needs a whooping. ..|

Well said.

I saw him on Letterman last night and he was acting like he ran the show. I asked myself what happened to the kid from Pursuit of Happiness? Who is this brat?

I guess dad is cashing in on his son.

Yeah, i usually don't watch interviews(my attention span can be something like a gnat's lifespan), but he does sound especially cocky when he started talking about the jacket idea and the bodyguards and all that. It's almost like he's "bored" of doing interviews or something.

I mean, i already wasn't going to see it, but he kinda needs to be humbled. FAST.

? ?

Where's that interview?

I know what JyStar is talking about. He was seemed bored to being there and acted like he was too cool to do an interview.

Maybe that's just I'm picking up though and hopefully it's just a phase.

He looked like a kid who was uncomfortable with the interview thing, but he didn't hesitate to answer any questions. He did liven up on the business about the kiss, though.

All this just because I asked why he was the 'Karate Kid' when he was being taught Kung Fu.

^ But it seems so insignificant now.

I don't believe I've ever had such a successful thread which was so completely off topic. ..|

My answer to your question would be that the studio execs probably think Karate is soooo 1980's whereas kids nowadays will think Kung Fu is "cooler"

Why bother naming the movie Karate Kid at all is beyond me!

If badly rehashing classic movies is you're idea of entertainment, have at it. Not for me. [-X

Jystar and a few others caught some sense of what i was speaking about. I'm not hating on this kid...i'm just saying that he could show a bit of humility. He's already acting like he's the shit or something (in my opinion).

Indeed. There is a report with Ralph Macchio and his impressions of the remake. It includes a photo (which can't be posted here) with Ralph and Jaden together. Check it out and see the attitude for yourself:

"As of September 2009, there are two proposed remakes."

The only thing the second one had in common with the original is the title. I don't consider that a remake.

The first one, at least, seems to have used some of the original footage but the story seems to have changed as well.

I mean, that's like remaking Deliverance and using UPS drivers having it out with Fed Ex drivers in Chicago or something like that.

Here's an interview I found, but it obviously isn't the one you guys are talking about; there's nothing about bodyguards:

What's freaky to me is how much Jaden's mannerisms are like his dad's.

That's called "updating", because the original was too dated. I think the first one had old footage compared to the same scene in the remake.

Well, while we're at it...you need "e.g.," and "i.e.," NOT "e.g.", and "i.e.",

In proper grammar, the comma (or any punctuation) always proceeds the quotation mark, not trails. But then again, you should already know that since you wanted to pick apart my post as if you were the Dean of the English and Literature Dept. [-X [-X [-X
