  • Hi Guest - Did you know?

I'm depressed about people's poor choices

It might be a better world if the disenfranchised were running it, but I doubt it. Poverty isn't a virtue any more than wealth is.

Some guy in the Bible said TWO THOUSAND YEARS ago that the poor will always be with us. Our great-grandchildren will be saying the poor will always be with us.

which guy and who said it.

honestly when your head comes out of your ass then I may listen.

so that means that the ones who can stop poverty should just pretend it is just tradition.

really dude.

He is, of course, quoting the Christ.

It was the occasion of Mary (Lazarus' sister) pouring expensive oil of nard on Jesus as an act of adoration. The onlookers criticized her for waste when the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor.

get religion out of this.

the poor are here because the rich will not share the wealth.

Fuck the poor - give expensive stuff to the people who are hot right now. That's what I always assumed it meant, anyway.

I've seen life from both sides now. I've had the killer job and the corner office, then through no fault of my own, lost it all. I've learned that quite often what happens to us is NOT a choice, but how we react to it is. I've given up a lot to be at home when my family needed me most, to see my wife through a grave illness and to support my little children through it all with as little psychological damage as possible. No more luxury vacations south twice a year, got rid of the bimmer too. But was at home to be with my wife through her chemo every freakin' day, to help put my daughters to bed when mommy was too sick, wake them up and get them ready for school too. I've done my absolute best. But sometimes God does give us too much to deal with. Watching our home burn down to the ground was the last straw. A lifetime of work and memories all gone. All while going through chemo is too much to handle. Depression and mental illness can quickly move in, like they did for me.

So please, don't be too quick to judge the poor guy you see on the street. You don't know where he came from. And you don't know how close you are to that exact situation. Just be thankful and pray that it doesn't happen to you.

Ha ha ha ha ha! So, explaining the quote you asked about is "getting religion into it"?

For the record, sharing the wealth was one of the most prominent teachings Jesus returned to when speaking of the Kingdom of God. But, sharing doesn't mean living austerely to do so. The Christ never suggested not helping the poor, but he was also not shy about speaking frankly to people about making necessary changes in their lives.

Yeah, religion is all over this topic.

religion is not all over this topic you tool you just started it.

now go kneel down somewhere and beg forgiveness.

It may not be for you, but for millions of people on the planet, charity and religion are inseparable.

Why the name calling? Why are you not able to talk without insulting?

You called out Pat for his quote. Instead of citing why the quote was inappropriate, you asked about the quote, one of the most famous quotes in history about "the poor." But, I'm the tool. Riiiiiight.

You're not a tool.
Wish the anti-religious would recognize that they hold common values with the religious.
Many values are formalized by religion, rather than invented by a religion.

charity and religion can be separable.

it's when religion thinks that the only way to give charity is if you believe in the same god.

why not just help.

Be careful, he could have had a gun or a knife or even rabies.

Nah, if he was coming after me, he would have had to go through some very big construction workers to get to me.

You don't know squat about what hand this guy has been dealt. You are not the decider. All these fucking Dr Phils running around passing judgement on things they haven't a clue about. Don't you have a hard enough time walking in your own shoes without judging others whose shoes you've never worn?
Anyone who thinks a person on the streets is living the life of fame and leisure is a village idiot. Try it for a couple days and maybe you will be looking for a buzz from a 2 buck beer to make it through another miserable night alone, in the elements, bugs, and potential violence.

I'm sorry that I have offended you or come off as judgmental. Wasn't my intention.

While I certainly wasn't born into financial privilege, I was blessed with being born into another kind of privilege. I was literally born in a house with a dirt floor on another continent. My family came here with exactly $10 and change. Both my folks became laborers to support us kids. Within 10 years from when we set foot in America, we have an IT professional, an electrical engineer, a structure engineer, and a mathematician. I was the youngest so I didn't go to college until all my brothers and sisters were already professionals and have families of their own. There really are a lot of opportunities out there. More than one can imagine.

You can say I'm the spoiled one, since engineering specializing in structural construction and inspection is my 3rd career path.

I think if you've come in contact with these guys enough times you will have a different attitude about them. I've given them sandwiches that were suppose to be my lunches only to see them take a bite and throw away the rest. Who doesn't like Jimmy John's? I've given them rides to where they needed to go. I just haven't taken them into my home yet.

It depresses me to think that at some point in their lives (probably after a series of events that were out of their control) they simply gave up on trying. My family has had our fair share of poverty so I know how devastating it can be. For example, as a kid I remember there were days when our mother told us to go back to sleep because there was nothing to eat on that day. What mattered was we never stopped trying. And as soon as the opportunity came up, all my brothers and sisters went to college while still trying to learn how to say "hello" in English.

Many values are formalized by religion, rather than invented by a religion.

Don't forget the fact that social progress never come from religion. They come from progressives despite overwhelming opposition from religion.

Ending slavery, ending segregation, women suffrage, civil rights, gay rights, environmental awareness, etc. were all ideas brought forth by progressives and strongly opposed by religion. But religion has the habit of making a 180 turn and lie right through their teeth by claiming credit afterwards. I'm willing to bet that after this post, a whole host of religious people will try to say that religion never opposed these progressive ideas. And years from now, religious people will try to make people forget that gay rights are progressing now despite overwhelming religious opposition.
