I've been feeding them for a few years not, but the bag I emptied is the last one I am buying.

Until recently, I was able to enjoy swallows, mourning doves, blue jays, and there was even a single cardinal dining out in my back yard last year. Oh, and the obligatory squirrels. They truly love bird seed, especially if it has sunflower seeds in it.

Now, the pigeons and black birds and crows have taken over. I can't keep them away, and they keep all the other birds away.

Too bad. I used to enjoy watching them. The swallows especially would be waiting for me in the early mornings and would land right beside me as I sprinkled the seed around.

I shall miss them.

I bet you could find ways, or seed combinations, to encourage the birds you want and discourage the ones you don't. I know how to keep squirrels out of a bird feeder: put crushed red pepper in it. Doesn't bother the birds, but it gives the squirrels quite a turn!

Maybe there are seeds that swallows like more and crows like less? I don't know, I'm just speculating. Could be worth exploring.

^ Tell me about it:

I'm not SURE about Pigeons and Blackbirds...

BUT...

The CROWS WON'T stay...

They're NOT THERE for the bird seed -- they're there for the animals EATING the bird seed...

STICK WITH IT GSDX!!!

Its worth it..

:):):)

Mr. Boots enjoy watching them from the window?
Going out to "say hi"?

ugh... I hate pigeons ... HATE THEM...

All over this city and they like to horn in on any food dropped ... even if I'm trying to feed those cute little wind up birds... the ones that hop around like they have a little key in them.

The crows were occasional visitors but, over the past few weeks, it's been only pigeons and blackbirds. They've been keeping the usual birds away and I'm not wasting my money on pigeons and blackbirds.

The crows do stay... at least at my house. It's been at least two years of crows always show up cawing about two hours before I plan on waking up. They annoy the crap out of me.

^There is a radio talk show host from Portland, OR that believes PIGEONS are actually EXTRA TERRESTRIALS -- and that you NEVER see a DEAD pigeon...

UNFORTUNATELY, I can offer NO advice -- as we have never encountered either blackbirds OR pigeons at our feeder...

I'm HOPING that someone here has the ANSWER though...

I've seen dead pigeons. The only good pigeons, in my opinion.

Persistent crows on roofs are usually the sign of death or tragedy incoming...to anyone indwelling the house. Do any of those happen to you?

Pigeons are not extra-terrestrials... they are vagrants that have learned how to "Trashmogrify"

I doubt you can get a different bird seed to get the crows to leave. They are omnivores and will even eat rotting flesh after all.

I like crows, as my forum name would suggest - they are really smart birds. Here's something I found after a quick google search, maybe you could become friends with them?

But, aside from that - yea, pigeons are nasty.

That really sucks, gsdx.

I love feeding birds.

One time at work, while eating outside, I started throwing crushed up jalapeno chips at them

And they ate them right up! Until that dang crow came. :grrr:

Who knew birds like jalapeno chips? :D

Oh, so some BLACK birds move in and all of a sudden "there goes the neighborhood"? I see how it is...
