I'm not feeding the birds anymore

Who knew birds like jalapeno chips? :D

Capsaicin, the oil responsible for the hotness of jalapenos, has no effect on birds. It does work on mammals. That's why putting red pepper in your bird feeder keeps the squirrels* out.
_____
*Most of them. I've heard of an occasional crazy squirrel who would eat the red pepper, make the wide-eyed omigod face that they do when they eat it, and go back for more.

Críostóir,
I know a few Homo Sapiens who react that way to Capsaicin, too, lol.

That would be the one.

I enjoy a wide range of peppers and related sauces -

Oh, yeah. Saw that movie on the old 19" Silvertone B&W when I was a kid - talk about leaving you with nightmares?!

Someone should do a mashup of this song with a bird-attack scene from Hitchcock's The Birds.

The suggestions from Birds & Bloom are generally good. I've tried some of those tips w/ varied results. Getting rid of the feeders all together for awhile worked better than using a smaller feeder. After all, all the larger birds had to do was wait on the ground for the smaller birds to drop a few seeds.

Kahaih has the right idea. Adding bird friendly foliage/flowers to your landscaping and switching to a hummingbird feeder will also save you tons of money. Or, why not just add a bird bath? That way you can observe the birds w/o feeding and attracting a bunch of pests.

Damn I'm old. I logged into JUB to join in the "bird" thread.

I thought "feeding the birds" was a euphemism for Onanism. I was ready to discuss the dangers of blue balls. Carry on, my ornithological comrades...
