Because they thought it might induce global chilling because of less sunlight hitting the earth's surface, they probably didn't call them "greenhouse gases" yet, but I forget.

No, there weren't scientists back then. Besides there wasn't any expectation the Earth could get any cooler (for good reason).

There was no studying of greenhouse gases. Nor was there any knowledge of (or likely existence of much in the way of) greenhouse gases.
