I'm so old I remember............?

ISOIR my first trip on the elevators in the Empire State Building, and the resulting view.

OK, so that gives none of you a time frame. That could have been three days ago, but it's much longer than that.

Oh, OK, that does say that I'm remembering something not so long ago that the ESB didn't exist yet.

DEAL WITH IT...

ISOIR watching the rest of y'all's ancestors swimming in the primordial ooze.

ISOIR when Xmas lites looked like this. When 1 went out, the entire string would go dark, & my parents would have to go thru the entire string to find the dead bulb.

ISOIR when these were the latest rage!!

ISOIR when "Christmas lights" were nothing but candles. And ornaments held water should the flames start a fire in the tree. The "ornaments" would break open, releasing the water and douse the tree. Downside was present would often get soaked through.

ISOIR when longer cars (those which often had folding-down rear seats, and an inside deck going farther back to the "tailgate" - which often opened SIDEWAYS instead of up or down) - were called a STATION WAGON.

So what 2008?

Granted, the rear door opens like a hatchback, but otherwise its still the same.

ISOIR when the standard mode of transportation was a Brontosaurus.

And they also DO NOT call it a "STATION WAGON" - either a "hatchback" or a "mini-van" right?

What kind of documentaries are you watching? It was a long time ago and film didn't exist yet, so they drew it all like cartoons. LOL

Nope. Still a station wagon, sometimes just wagon for short. But they were also called wagons in the 80s. But one of the reasons for the opening up change is that you can lay something extra long in the back and strap the door down over it without having to close it all the way if necessary. They used to have some that had a double opening where the tailgate went down like a pickup and the upper half lifted up like a hatchback, but those were rare and didn't seem to stick around.

But yeah, a few of the manufacturers stretched the basic SW model up and took to calling it an SUV. The minivan got mixed in, but actually came about as a smaller version of the full sized passenger van. But yes, it eventually got swallowed up by the SUVs. Hatchbacks were small cars that didn't have an actual trunk, they were a blending of the station wagon and the compact car. There's a long history of taking two different classes and hybridizing them into a "new" class.

The one, and only, station wagon my family ever owned. 1960 Plymouth Fury. Our was all yellow. \:/

Due to repeated problems with it's brake system, it was also the shortest time we kept a car. #-o

Constipated? No. I'm just so old my memories have gone to shit. :rotflmao:

ISOIR when your great-great-great (etc) grandfather was born.

ISOIR Tom Edison's son driving a Cadillac very much like this. It was Bottle Green, mahogany & real cowhide interior. The car was vintage 1947 (just like me). I saw him in 1965, just before graduating high school. He lived in the gated section of West Orange, NJ, where his parents had a huge red brick mansion (they are buried in the grounds). I grew up up the street from his factory/museum.
The area is known as Llewellyn Park, Whoopi Goldberg has a 1920s Art Deco mansion there now.

ISOIR growing up in the "shadow of the bomb" & not worrying about it. I think (for obvious reasons) that the world is more dangerous now

ISOIR when I wore this get-up on my wedding day (guess the year! ;) ) .....
