1. How did Jack die in the end? It was sort of confusing. Did he kill himself or was he murdered?

Murdered.

2. What did Ennis whisper in Jacks ear when he was holding him in Jack's flashback? (I missed it).

I can't remember... lol

3. Does anyone have a link to the short story online?

I have the story on my computer, I could e-mail it if you give me your e-mail address.

WHAT???? He dies??????

Yes, there's still one left who hasn't seen the whole movie...

In a way I'm kinda glad I know this. I wouldn't have been able to handle the shock.

i have not seen it yet either but i will see it now jsut to see whats its really about

I'll add my name to the list of those who have not seen it yet...it's on my list of things to do (eventually)...but not very high on it.

I didn't mind reading the spoilers.

Saw it, and regretted it. It was such a dumb movie. It was really just a corny love story just with 2 guys as the lead. I didn't think it was all that special.

Totally agree. I bought the short story and really liked it, so I thought the movie would be pretty good.

Noo, I was wrong. It was way slow and just kind of... dumb (thanks Danno).

I just saw it a few weeks ago, and I could not see what all the hype was about! It's an OK movie. It was kinda confusing, had more questions then answers!

You guys!
Did we see the same movie? I saw it in its first run from titles to credits and thought it was absolutely wonderful. If you saw only a conventional love story; if your heart was not touched with the bittersweet love Ennis and Jack found on the mountain, and nourished the rest of their lives....my God! What would it take to reach you? You have obviously not loved and lost someone irreplaceable and unique. As to the part Ennis whispered to Jack, which nobody seems to have caught: "check your fly."

I've mentioned this before, but the part that really made us laugh was their first fuck. I mean, a virgin butt and a hard cock with only spit for lube and no foreplay:eek: .....I don't think so. With all those sheep, they should have had some lanolin on hand, right? :p I remember my first time...that's all I can say. #-o

Well, if they made it into a musical, I'm sure it would rival the butt entry in Rocky Horror...

That's why I downloaded it off the Internet to see it. Because they weren't playing it at the theaters near me. But I now have it on DVD.

In the original short story there's a line " so now he knew it had been tire iron" in Enis's mind when he heard what Jack's father said. So in Annie Proulx's mind Jack was murdered.

The original story has a more ruthless and raw beauty. The film softened the cruelty in Proulx's fictional world. Go to see it just as a movie, not some groundbreaking gay love story, and you will appreciate more its subtlety, its power under the quiet surface, its extraordinary emotional quality, its humanistic care.

The sex scene is a bit unnatrual but you can only blame Annie Proulx. After all she hasn't experienced it , right?;) I guess she just wanted to display the roughness as well as subtlety in her characters, which is a central theme in the short story collection Close Range.

I found it extremely frustrating that I failed to avoid spoilers and knew the death beforehand....

the sex scene may have seemed odd because it didn't have the usual make-up, cheap porn music, and dubbed sound.

Sorry but you are wrong - I taped the film about 6-7 months ago and i still have not seen it.

I still have a question in my mind as to whether i do want to see it or not?

When you think of the film: "Sunday Bloody Sunday" - now over 30 years old, with Glenda Jackson and Peter Finch - one wonders how they could come up with a better and more complex story of a homosexual/bisexual realtionship(s) then this film does.

If nothing else people, buy the script and read it. It is in p.b. and is a superb read.

The range of emotions and interactions that are dealt with in that film are as critical today as the were 30 years ago and that film came into release by a major studion and director without all the "show and tell" of Mtn. - why? because it was/is a brilliant and intelligent piece of the ART of Motion Pictures.

The lack of REAL connection between Jack and Ennis was the problem for me. Yes, i realise they are acting but for me, I could really see Heath and Jake, not their characters. There didnt seem to be a connection excpet for the sex, which was akward. I just couldn't believe them so i guess i didn't care. Heaths character seems to finally admit to loving Jack only after he is dead which is easy to do becasue it doesnt require a love or affection scene. I don't know i didn't feel it.

I agree. Indeed there lacks a realistic sense of connection between Jake and Heath.

I haven't seen the movie, even though I'm originally from Wyoming. (There is no Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming).

When you read the story, you realize that the sexual attraction between these two men is not at all physical, which, imho is something gay men have trouble with. They were lonely. They wanted/needed companionship. And, they found it in each other.

My biggest criticism of the Ang Lee film is that Jake Gyllenhall (sp?) and Heath Ledger are too cute. The story is about normal guys, doing hard work, and NOT being attractive who found friendship/love with each other.

The contrast is not between hetero/homo sexual relations in the story. It's between male/male relations that are close vs. too close for society to handle.

If you read the story, it's like Ed Asner and John Goodman met out on the range of the sheep-herding mountains.

It's more about male bonding than gay relationships. At least that's what I think.
