So guys, do you buy anything stupidly or by impulse sometimes?

I usually buy my books by artwork on the cover or by interesting title names (providing they are in a suitable genre) as I find some more unknown writers have given me some of the best reads of my life.

Today though after finishing a back-to-back double shift (no staff) I bought myself a case of beer...

For $38 (kinda cheap in Aus) I could not resist this... bought the beer entirely for the artwork, but the beer isn't too bad. Just like fruity cheap pilsner.

^

Both! Have to buy the guy/girl a drink first (hint, hint)...then the public service commences

I do this with tv shows, movies, and books. Yesterday, it was the second Fred movie. I've not seen it, but I think Lucas is tots cute.

I must have been burned on something as a child, because I've always been a careful consumer. The first thing I thought of while reading this thread was a four CD set of the soundtrack to the anime film Wings of Honneamise. It was $60 or so, and was the first thing I used my credit card to buy. But since I still own and love that CD 22years later, I doubt that really counts.

My partner impulse-bought a car once, though.

I did this a lot last year with DVD's. Generally I am very careful with what I buy; I'm notoriously fussy buying new clothes, and anything else I fancy I'm more likely to leave and regret not buying. But I went through a phase of buying any DVD that tickled my fancy and now I have a collection of films I've watched once and will never watch again. Worse still, the re-sale value is practically pointless so I wasted a fair amount of money.

And now I'm back to being careful.

^ I tend to be pretty careful about what DVDs I buy. After contemplating it or a couple of weeks, I finally sprung for the DVD of Spirited Away. That was four years ago...and the damn thing is still ipsealed in the plastic. :)

Many video games I haven't managed to play, many books I haven't managed to read, many DVDs I haven't managed to watch... I'm sure I'll get to everything eventually, though I still can't figure out why I bought a second copy of Pokémon Sapphire...

I still have La Vie En Rose, The Black Dahlia and I'm Not There in the plastic wrapping.

Books, whenever I go into a bookstore, I'll walk out buying a book, sometimes I don't even read it to finish.
Clothes, I have more self control but I guess I'll feel a bit sad of not able to buy it because I couldn't afford.

Food. Since I like to spend impulsively when stressed and eat when I'm bored/stressed, I would buy enough food for Sudanese village to last for a year and probably only eat 1/3 of it.

For me, impulsive buying is buying more than usual (e.g. buying more than 4 books at once instead of only 1 or 2). And I do it rarely; usually I only do it when I have saved pretty enough I can spend a little more and still it's difficult.
Even for reading, I find it hard to buy impulsively. I carefully select the things I want to buy and even on the cashier I still consider whether to buy it or not.

Books for me. I still have about 20 which I've bought at sales over the last 18 months unread, having read the other 30 or so I bought on the same sales already.

That aside, I'm quite careful about spending. I do occasionally buy stupid things, but it's rarely an impulse buy per se - usually I dither for a week or so convincing myself I need it before buying it and then regretting it two or three weeks later when I see through my own logic.

Books, I love the way a new book feels. DVDs that I only watch one. I've been doing better. Checking the library first before I buy books and just renting DVDs. (Would anyone like to buy seasons 1 - 6 of Degrassi: TNG? Don't know what I was thinking when I bought those.)

Also, used VCRs on ebay. (I know, I know. It's okay go ahead and laugh at me.)

I collect instrumentals (mainly soul and funk, but jazz and rock, too) from the 50s, 60s and 70s on 45. I love finding new ones that I've never heard of, and that are hella obscure. I know there are "crate diggers" who will push the prices of these things up, but luckily for me, they mainly go after the LPs, and consider the 45s sort of a lesser breed. (Maybe because they DJ, and the 45s don't look right on their turntables?) But I've paid top dollar for 45s I've listened to a few times.

omg. I'm the worst at impulse buying... Few days ago I bought some cookie shape cutters and icing tool to put icing on cake and stuff... I don't bake... I don't make cakes... but I want to!!!

I also almost bought a kindle even though I rarely read lol

Amateurs.

Last week, for no discernible reason I can fathom, other than I just suddenly decided I wanted some, I bought a set of Yamaha electronic drums + amp. I cannot play the drums, have never played drums, have never really had much of a desire to play the drums yet I now have drums. They are very cool. Unfortunately I am not. I am a dick who keeps acquiring musical instruments despite an almost Bieberesque lack of musical ability. In addition to my drums I also own two guitars and two ukuleles which I cannot play. I have previously owned an electric guitar, electric bass and an upright piano, none of which I ever learned to sodding play.

Now if you don't mind I'm off to make a few random bangy noises before I go to bed.

I did buy an electric bass, after considering it for about two years. It took me three weeks to realize how little musical ability I had, and to give it away to a musician friend.
