I enjoy sandalwood. Nag Champa is a personal fave as well.

"Ocean Breeze". I'm not sure who makes it, the store that I get mine at just have the sticks in separate jars with the scent names on them. It's a really light and clean scent, as opposed to the heavy floral scents that most sticks provide.

Athos Rose. It's made by the monks at the Mount Athos monastery in Greece, and smells exactly like a rose garden on a warm day.

Of course, last time I looked it was something like $75/ounce.


In general, in my experience, the liturgical incenses are far less likely to make a guy sneeze, but you have to have a proper burner for them.

Probably not since you would be inhaling smoke regardless what scent you choose.

Try burning essential oils or a candle instead. And if you're going flameless try a reed diffuser. There's also that thing where you melt wax in a shallow dish...

Anyway, I like "Hemingway".

The smoke from incense sticks is irritating because the combustion isn't as hot as in a proper censer, so the incense itself tends to burn more than merely vaporize. Additionally, the incense is not as pure. A good incense made for use in a censer will rarely cause sneezing unless you deliberately breathe in the smoke -- and not always then.

I like green tea and gardenia (very superb - I only smelled it once and I still remember the aroma until now) but I also like sandalwood and jasmine.

Protips: the incenses usually produce smoke and it could be a problem in poorly ventilated rooms. Lowly heated aromatherapy oils are better.

I disagree. If it has to be something religious to do with molesting boys, I much prefer "Bigotry" by The Roman Catholic Church.

I only burn sandalwood these days, and that's because it's the proper incense for Ganesha puja, which I've done every day for many years (mod a few days here or there - didn't do it in the hospital, or when evacced during Irene), so I'm used to it.

My coven used a proprietary mixture of sage (very mild and refreshing) with a little oak moss (harsh and biting).

Danger of using a real censer: carbon monoxide from the charcoal. This is not a problem in a big airy church, but that makes people forget the danger in a home environment. Safety tip: use only one piece of charcoal in your censer at a time, and make sure the room is ventilated.

Anyway, since my family is Hindu, and I breathe 20% oxygen, 80% incense smoke, the best incenses are the ones that are mild yet aromatic. Sandalwood or the New-Age lavender kinds.

My mum usually lights a few up and walk around the house with them, activating my asthma to newer, painful levels. As I accuse her of being my stepmum, she would leave it in the altar which is located in a very well-ventilated room with the windows open.

Incenses are quite similar to oils after lighting them up. The smell can be overpowering and thick if you leave it in a closed room. As a rule of thumb, leave it inside a close compartment, like an altar in a well-ventilated room. It allows proper diffusion I guess.

Oh and remember to pick good incenses. You don't want your room to be smelling like the crack of some whore in Calcutta.
