  • Hi Guest - Did you know?

innie/outie?

I'm an innie. I used to ask my Mother about my belly button when I was little. She said "that's where I was picked from the patch." Wonder what she would have said if I had asked about my penis?

i've always been a little bit inbetween. i'm mostly an innie though. i like bellybuttons. they can be really hot.

I'm an outie. I wasn't the only one at school, but I'm 32 now and I guess I can only think of 1, possibly 2 friends who are.

Someone previously said that most younger people these days will be outies not innies because it's easier - I hadn't heard that, but I don't know the answer to that one!

I used to think it was a family thing - e.g. if you were then your brother or sister probably were too. But maybe that's not true - the poster above says his brother is, but then there was someone earlier with an innie who said his brother was an outie :S

I can't find a reference to the more-young-people-will-be-outies thing... in a way you'd think medical science would make it easier to create innies than outies - outies should be easy anyway!

So do your brothers/sisters have the same type as you?

An outie can be thought of as a small version of an umbilical hernia, a condition where there is a "hole" in the abdominal muscles such that some of the contents in the abdomen protrude out. Umbilical hernias are more common in children and look like water balloons, especially when the child cries or coughs (increases intraabdominal pressure).

The type of belly button is genetically determined and does not relate to how the cord was cut (many inches from where the belly button is). Outies are more common on blacks and thin people, although most have innies. I would estimate the prevalence of outies at ~5% of adults, depending on the ethnicity. E-mail me with any questions::p
