insomniacs

causes all sorts of problems, and i bet theres a vicious cycle in there where they both contribute to eachother.

I'm one-hundred percent nocturnal, and during my school days I only really got any real rest during the weekends. I'd probably get one, maybe two hours of sleep every two or three days before the weekend, so my friends started to look out for me. I'm lucky I had such nice friends, even if I was a jack-ass to them most of the time.

i don't know who people live with such little sleep.

I have really odd sleeping patterns.

Many times I will not sleep at night. I stay up all night and sleep during the day, or sometimes skip a day so I can try and get back on a normal pattern. This really effects my work out routine and just day to day errands I need to do but I can't help it.

Very rarely will I actually have a normal sleeping schedule.

come to think of it.. im usually tired around 8-9 but wide awake by 11. ive tried going to sleep at 8-9 of course but then i wake up at 12 and cant even close my eyes until 5 am. glad we've all found some common ground here

Well to you insomniacs - it's not really a problem is it? Kinda nice maybe. You have all the time in the world to be productive and get more done than us who need our 7-8 hours. Unless, of course, the insomnia is making you tired during the day.

oh ye that knoweth so little.

not only does it make us tired during the day, but a lot of the time we're tired and sluggish at night as well, we just cant sleep anyway. no health problems or anything, but i generally have a pretty acute lack of work ethic.

Employment has always been a problem.

My ideal shift is something like 1-9:30 PM or later. And usually those jobs are crap retail jobs. No future there.

I've tried everything. Drugs (illegal and prescription), alcohol, sex, hitting myself over the head with a bat, and more. I just CAN'T sleep through the night unless it begins like 2AM or later. It really sucks.

Most favorite job I ever had began between 5 and 7 AM. Loved the job, the hours freaking killed me. I had to quit or die.

Valerian is an herb that when taken about 30 minutes prior to bed really does work. I usually only need to take one but two is good and safe as well. I generally take the lowest dose and if that doesn't work take a second. You wake refreshed and don't have to deal with addiction. The down side is when you open the bottle, the over whelming stink of dirty socks greets you...ugh. This stuff stinks, but it works and you can find it anywhere.

It's cheap and you might be helped to sleep, and stay asleep.

hmm.. i wonder how my roommate will feel about that..i just dont know if i could do that to him haha

:D Yeah you do have a point lol...you could open and close the bottle in the bathroom and use air freshener after...it doesn't leave any smell on you or come out pores.....| It truly is amazing how often I've had people remark on the smell...so I've taken to warning them..

For me, that's true to a degree. I'm hyper and driven anyway. If I get 5 hrs. of sleep, that's a lot! That's my version of sleeping in on a Saturday. Unfortunately, it's rare that I can manage to sleep that much, and yeah, sometimes I do accomplish more than most other folks I know. However, lack of sleep also dulls my reflexes after a while. I start forgetting simple things, like I'll enter a room, and not remember why I'm there. It also makes it more difficult to drive. Depending on how long I go w/o rest, I begin making mistakes that sleep could have prevented. Of course, correcting those mistakes takes time. I'm not sure whether insomonia is a benefit or a detriment in the long run.

Plus, it's difficult when other people feel you should be sleeping. When guests stay over, or I'm traveling for a conference, or whatever. It's awkward when "they" feel I should be asleep and hassle me about it. Not in a rude way, but they'll want to know why I'm awake. If I'm upset or worried about something. And, that's not the case, I just can't sleep.

It's also difficult to relate to those who need rest. I'm up and raring to go at 1:00 am, but I can't call a meeting or collaborate w/ my team, (and I've learned this the hard way) b/c other folks are in bed. I've also learned that it's improper to call people before 6:00 am. That can be very frustrating!

I'm a workaholic, but I also don't have depression or any other issues. Insomnia is it and since I've always been this way, I've learned to adapt to it (I guess). It runs in my family. I do make a lot of needless, silly errors that I imagine would be prevented w/ some sleep.

By the way, has anyone found any tips/tricks that actually work? I've tried everything from creating a "bed time routine," to using a sound soother, to having a warm bath beforehand. Taking OTC sleeping pills help, but I feel hung over the next day.

EVERYone that knows me knows damn well NEVER EVER call me before 10 AM. You will die. End of discussion. :D

OMG! I thought I was the only one with this issue. I barely get good sleep cause my mind starts to race...lol. I also take Tylenol PM which sometimes works. Other times---it just numbs me but no sleep. :(
I work in a call center dealing with people and this non sleep makes me crabby where I wish I didnt have to talk to people all day long!! Im looking for another job but the way economy is nowadays... GrrRRRRR!

I find that when I grab a book and start reading in bed...I can fall asleep--also drinking some high Vitamin C drinks...like Orange juice, Cranberry juice, etc. ;)
