I'm one-hundred percent nocturnal, and during my school days I only really got any real rest during the weekends. I'd probably get one, maybe two hours of sleep every two or three days before the weekend, so my friends started to look out for me. I'm lucky I had such nice friends, even if I was a jack-ass to them most of the time.
i don't know who people live with such little sleep.
oh ye that knoweth so little.
not only does it make us tired during the day, but a lot of the time we're tired and sluggish at night as well, we just cant sleep anyway. no health problems or anything, but i generally have a pretty acute lack of work ethic.
Well to you insomniacs - it's not really a problem is it? Kinda nice maybe. You have all the time in the world to be productive and get more done than us who need our 7-8 hours. Unless, of course, the insomnia is making you tired during the day.

For me, that's true to a degree. I'm hyper and driven anyway. If I get 5 hrs. of sleep, that's a lot! That's my version of sleeping in on a Saturday. Unfortunately, it's rare that I can manage to sleep that much, and yeah, sometimes I do accomplish more than most other folks I know. However, lack of sleep also dulls my reflexes after a while. I start forgetting simple things, like I'll enter a room, and not remember why I'm there. It also makes it more difficult to drive. Depending on how long I go w/o rest, I begin making mistakes that sleep could have prevented. Of course, correcting those mistakes takes time. I'm not sure whether insomonia is a benefit or a detriment in the long run.
Plus, it's difficult when other people feel you should be sleeping. When guests stay over, or I'm traveling for a conference, or whatever. It's awkward when "they" feel I should be asleep and hassle me about it. Not in a rude way, but they'll want to know why I'm awake. If I'm upset or worried about something. And, that's not the case, I just can't sleep.
It's also difficult to relate to those who need rest. I'm up and raring to go at 1:00 am, but I can't call a meeting or collaborate w/ my team, (and I've learned this the hard way) b/c other folks are in bed. I've also learned that it's improper to call people before 6:00 am. That can be very frustrating!
I'm a workaholic, but I also don't have depression or any other issues. Insomnia is it and since I've always been this way, I've learned to adapt to it (I guess). It runs in my family. I do make a lot of needless, silly errors that I imagine would be prevented w/ some sleep.
By the way, has anyone found any tips/tricks that actually work? I've tried everything from creating a "bed time routine," to using a sound soother, to having a warm bath beforehand. Taking OTC sleeping pills help, but I feel hung over the next day.
