So Canada's 'National [STRIKE]Newspaper[/STRIKE] BirdCage Liner' has an incredibly insulting editorial cartoon in the July 4 Saturday paper.

I guess some asshat thought that this was an appropriate way to recognize India's landmark change in legal status of homosexuals.

I can't figure out if I am more disgusted by the way they chose to caricature men of Indian race or the idea of two men being able to openly express their sexual orientation.

Everyone should make it clear to the editorial board that they owe all their readers an apology for this piece of shit.

It's stereotypical. The world's fastest growing economy is being portrayed with the dignity that Kipling or Rhodes would have given.

To be honest, I thought the National Post would have done this.

Erm......

I guess I am just to desensitized to this type of stuff?

It's horribly stereotypical. Gay elephants do NOT entwine trunks and stare into each other's eyes. Everyone knows that.

Lex

India passed a law yesterday that Gay sex is no longer illegal... so what is wrong with this? How else would they show the men as being Indian without seeming "racist"?

Yup a bit stereotypical but not insulting. I guess elephant is the national animal of India.

That is an odd cartoon. I didn't realize the two figures seated on the heads of the elephants were supposed to represent people.

Probably that says enough about the quality of the drawing. Mind you the Globe may be well written but its cartoons have never managed to reach the level of memorability of the ones done by Kal over at the Economist.

Careful there, sport; that chip you're carrying can't be too good for your posture.

Lighten the fuck up. I'm up for a good :grrr: session when it's warranted but this is just ridiculous. Right up there with feminists who want Little Lulu to wear pants (seriously).

Two monkeys kissing and two elephants kissing??

Exactly.

Undisclosed...

My case rests. The first person I showed it to wanted to know why apes were riding elephants...until they looked more closely.

I'll lighten the fuck up when newspapers don't portray any race in a denigrating way in their pages. They turned something significant into a joke. I'll lighten the fuck up when every homo around the world has the same rights and freedoms as in Canada.

Until then.

Hmmm, I thought homosexuality was supposed to be all hunky-dory in Canada.

Exactly.

Truth is, homophobia is alive and well everywhere (including Canada). :(

Homophobia is on life support in Canada. It is strange to find it in the Globe, because they are usually all about civilisation.

The one elephant looking slightly alarmed at the attentions of the other, I could accept as being representative of the apprehension apparent in India about coping with this change. But the seated figures I thought were monkeys at first. Now I think they are Indian people intentionally portrayed as monkeys. I think the arcs of the elephants' backs are intended to suggest the tails of the monkeys without blatantly drawing tails.

I am not an artist but I find something inescapably intentionally demeaning about this drawing.

Better to have drawn two stick men representations kissing than that!I am hardly politically correct, but that is really off putting. Some posters want to know what the big deal is.....well,look closer or get better glasses/contacts,because they are ugly, insulting caricatures.

Hey I don't look like that.

My trunk's usually longer.

It's hard to recognize them sometimes if your own race has none of its own.

Well then your friend needs to change their glass prescriptions. The people on the elephants are elongated and dressed in stereotypical indian way but are clearly not monkey.

The lips are big because they're puckered for a kiss! Jesus.

It's an exaggerated drawing. Not racist. Get off it.

Truly one of the most stupid threads in JUB history. The OP is clueless and has embarrassed himself by starting the thread. Much ado about nothing!
