Insulting Globe and Mail Editorial Cartoon

I'm a guy that never sees the outrage in stuff and am always thinking people are over-reacting. Not this time. That cartoon is racist, the end. Besides, if you want to represent India these days it should be 2 guys in a call center.

^ What if it is racist? Do we really have nothing better to do than to be offended by racist/sexist/offensive cartoons? It's a freaking drawing!

And this is the attitude that is so fucking depressing, even coming from yet another alter ego newbie 'straight' avatar speaking out on the issue.

Of course we have 100 other things to do and I do them every day. But we also have time to notice and react against racism and homophobia; particularly when it is portrayed in a national newspaper.

To ignore it means that each time we lose a little more ground.

But Twinkletoes....you and the others can just go back to fretting about the latest celebrity death and what shirt you'll be wearing to the clubs this week and whether you should be pursuing the straight guy at work.

Because I guess that is what being a homo must come down to.

Are we not asking a bit much, expecting all quick-sketch daily paper cartoonists to produce perfect drawings which are caricatures in only modern, socially acceptable and entirely committee-approved politically correct ways?

Storm in a teacup, chaps. The cartoon just needs to get the point across. FFS, here I am wondering what this has to do with India since we have more, and bigger, elephants in Africa than they do and I don't immediately associate India with elephants.

The fact that the drawings of the 2 figures on the elephants are not Nat Geo photographs of Indian people is hardly cause for a pants-wetting, is it?

^ And with South Africa's record on race relations and cultural sensitivity....your message is an inspiration to all of us in Canada and the US.

Well then thank the Good Lord that I'm not South African, even though I live here.

And, by the way, we have legalised gay marriage over here unlike the good ol' US of A, so put that in your culturally sensitive pipe and smoke it. Jesus, at least make sure of your facts before coming into a battle of wits unarmed.

Oh God.

Yet another generally invisible and remarkably usually silent avatar with a cryptic alphanumeric name turns up to post in this thread versus all the others.

We all respect your insightful comments and interesting opinions on issues that you usually post about.

How many more yet to come?

^So? You're thus only as culturally sensitive as the saffers you've just slated. Well done.

Round of applause, ladies and gentlemen.

Uh....................explain please?

I would note that as a Canadian, we are fully aware of the work that went into getting rights for all homos, including marriage.

As a Canadian, I'd like to think that our inclusivist culture has led us to have respect for every nationality and race without relying on crude caricatures for people of other countries.

I think Jenkins missed the mark on this and lowered the standard of editorial cartoons for the paper.

You and a whole lot of other avatars do not.

At the end of the day, I think that I am the better man for not finding this cartoon inspiring or cute or acceptable in this newspaper.

I think that those who just shrug off or justify even subtle racism or homophobia only make the struggle for human rights and dignity all that much harder.

But I certainly wouldn't expect anything better from you based on past posts.

I think Indians have every reason to feel insulted by this depiction of "contemporary" Indian life. Today's India sports a highly educated, technologically skilled, sophisticated work force that is developing state of the art tools and devices that we will be using tomorrow. I don't any of that reality reflected in this cartoon.

People who lack the presence of mind to see the inappropriateness of this depiction need to take a good look at themselves and how much they know about the world around us.

Speaking as a Canadian, rareboy, I find you a bloody embarassment. You embody all the PC shit that really is a blight on Canadian society.

Well tit.

You certainly are entitled to express an opinion as this particular persona.

Only 7 posts since 2005? And you've used two of them to bash me?

Where ya been? We miss the type of erudite observation you bring to any discussion.

I'll look forward to more of your pithy and mordant posts in the future under whatever name you choose to go by that day.

Blah blah blah.

Guy, it's a fucking cartoon. It's not the official commissioned portrait of the occasion for the UN's entrance hall to their offices in Geneva or New York, it's not supposed to be a poignant reminder of how far we've come, it's not meant to be line-for-line rendering of two real people on two real elephants. It's just a little bit of social commentary.

It's a cartoon. My sister is a graphic artist - sometimes her drawings of people aren't photographs of them and that's one of her limitations. Did the cartoonist mean any malice? Was there an offensive caption? Was he intending to malign an entire country? Apart from not-great line doodles of two people, it's not like he's taking a swipe at India. It's perhaps not his finest piece, but only one of his can be. All the rest is going to be sub-standard by comparison. You're not stupid so you must know this.

Is it really worth crucifying the guy for? Do you take a flail to yourself if you make a balls-up at work? How many times have you fallen on your own sword?

Right, because all my threads and posts invariably descend into racist chaos and I am entirely and rightly regarded as JUB's biggest bigot, aren't I?

Spare me.

I'm curious to know if you've ever worked for a company or agency that advanced a doctrine of social responsibility. And if so, would you find it appropriate to circulate cartoons depicting "porch monkeys" around the office for laughs? Would you expect to still be working there the next day?

^Dude, I live in South Africa

Here you just have to look at somebody in the wrong tone of voice to be accused of racism, thanks to our colourful past. 9999 times out of 10000 it's simply hypersensitivity and making a mountain out of what might be a molehill or might just be a small pile of sand.

Personally, I'm tired of hearing people cry "Racism!" when it's not very obvious, so I take it with a pinch of salt, and then another pinch to be on the safe side.

Perhaps the OP should provide us with other examples of the cartoonist's work so we can see how, this time, he absolutely and undeniably went out of his way to denigrate the Indians. If it's that blatantly obvious I will be only too happy to change my tune in the face of the empirical evidence.

Is that fair?

You know I'm tired of people shouting down anyone who criticizes a racist idea by saying "Hey, this is less serious than the Holocaust so what is the problem?"

Pointing out a racist idea with another idea (writing a letter to the editor, posting on here, etc.) is a totally reasonable response, and does not mean the end of civilization.
