Insulting Globe and Mail Editorial Cartoon

i cannot believe the firestorm of criticism that has rained down on blackbeltninja all because he doesn't agree to see racism in the editorial cartoon.

i still agree with titmouse when he said that some people want to see racism in everything. these are the people who like to bitch about anything that comes along, and will jump on the bandwagon no matter what the "cause" is as long as it gets them noticed. these are also the people who need to get a life, and as titmouse so rightfully put it, need to "get the fuck over yourselves."

^Dude, I live in South Africa

Here you just have to look at somebody in the wrong tone of voice to be accused of racism, thanks to our colourful past. 9999 times out of 10000 it's simply hypersensitivity and making a mountain out of what might be a molehill or might just be a small pile of sand.

Personally, I'm tired of hearing people cry "Racism!" when it's not very obvious, so I take it with a pinch of salt, and then another pinch to be on the safe side.

Perhaps the OP should provide us with other examples of the cartoonist's work so we can see how, this time, he absolutely and undeniably went out of his way to denigrate the Indians. If it's that blatantly obvious I will be only too happy to change my tune in the face of the empirical evidence.

Is that fair?

A racist comic does not need to be created by a racist man.

Also, racism is never an intention.

And finaly: unless you work directly for some sort of fair practices organization in south africa or speaking on some source of data, I'm certain that those 10000 complaints are only a flight of your fancy.

Just out of curiosity, what constitutes racism in the minds of those who say people are too quick to judge things as racist?

By the way, anyone who tells others to get the fuck over themselves and to get a life should be able to withstand a little firestorm of criticism I think. I would say they are not too delicate to withstand a little criticism of their own.

just to help you get your jibes straight: the "firestorm of criticism" response was referring to blackbeltninja.

titmouse was the one who originally said that people need to "get the fuck over themselves," which, i will state again, i agree with.

i, nadawon80, was the one who said that people need to "get a life," which i wholeheartedly stand by.

and for the record: i can take all the criticism you want to send my way. i just hope you're not too delicate to take what comes your way.

Rareboy: Classic example of the humorless liberal. Instead of getting laid, he's probably fretting about global warming.

Well Mr. South Africa who's tired of hearing about racism. You sound you're feeling nostalgic about the good old days when minorities kept their feelings to themselves and everything was so serene.

Sorry; you all look the same to me. I must be prejudiced.

If you are inviting criticism, I'll note that you didn't have the balls to actually answer the question. I saw something roll under the table. I think they might be over there -------->

Racism is never an intention.

Really? So the KKK do their thing entirely by accident?

And finaly: unless you work directly for some sort of fair practices organization in south africa or speaking on some source of data, I'm certain that those 10000 complaints are only a flight of your fancy.

The 10000 complaints are from listening to radio every morning and evening on my commute and reading the daily papers over the course of the last 15 years. In order to not be seen as harbouring racism, and sometimes because the race card is the easiest one to play here in .za, the average saffer spots countless instances of "racism" every day.

In much the same way as a man whose only tool is a hammer sees everything he encounters as a nail.

I'm not saying racism doesn't exist. I am saying I don't believe it to be as prevalent as everyone makes out.

Well Mr. South Africa who's tired of hearing about racism. You sound you're feeling nostalgic about the good old days when minorities kept their feelings to themselves and everything was so serene.

Actually, as mentioned, I am in fact not from South Africa. Reading not your strong suit, eh? Tsk.

Nor is logic, apparently - the minorities here in Africa are not the black people.

And a little history, since clearly you have NO IDEA what actually happened here, the majority has not been silent in either .za, nor back home in .zw, in my lifetime with things getting loud and physical since 1955 at the very latest and probably much much earlier than that.

I have never supported racism and will never support racism; I have never nor will I ever promote a racist agenda and IF you can find proof to the contrary - I have 2700-odd posts here you can trawl through, so feel free - you should certainly bring it to the attention of all and sundry.

And until you can do that, you can quietly go fuck yourself.

bankside said:
Pointing out a racist idea with another idea (writing a letter to the editor, posting on here, etc.) is a totally reasonable response, and does not mean the end of civilization.

Neither does responding in a fairly civil manner with "actually to be honest I don't think it's racist" so I'm glad we've cleared that up.

Gee Ninja,

You thought this would be a cake walk didn't you?

I guess that you and the alter-ego avatars thought that you would just shout this one down. And now you've had to absolutely beg to convince all of us that you and South Africa are not endemically racist.
It is pretty desperate when you have to ask readers to trawl through 2700 posts to prove to them that you're not just a reactionary white supremacist.

For the rest of the brain-trust, most of them don't have enough posts put together to make the effort worthwhile. You/they should use the various noms de guerre more often so that they all have a larger post count over a three or four year timeframe. That way, when tit et al actually have something to say on a subject it would actually look like they are real individuals.

All of this just because I made fun of your thread about old guys ogling you in the in the gym showers.

As I've said, I'm satisfied that my anger was in defense of an actual principle and ideal. That the national newspaper of a liberal, inclusivist nation like Canada had failed its readers by stooping to using the hammer of a poorly executed cartoon to diminish the impact of such a tremendous advance in human rights in India.

Not just vitriol spewed at other Jubbers because of some personal vendetta.

Sorry, sport

Hate to break it to you - this has nothing to do with my old thread. In fact, usually you're the one barging into the threads I create - easy enough to prove, I suspect, since I create so few - and not vice-versa, so I'm hardly the JUB stalker here. You, on the other hand... Nevertheless, as Dr Phil once said, you wouldn't worry half as much what other people think about you if you knew how much they didn't - something to consider, perhaps.

Incidentally, just because your brain trust hasn't racked up tens of thousands of posts like the guys in F&G doesn't mean that they have nothing worthwhile to say. Empty vessels, eh? I thought you'd know that - perhaps I've overestimated your abilities there; sincerest apologies, old boy.

Perhaps you should aim your guns away from 70000 homos in here and bring this huge miscarriage of justice to the attention of CNN, or even TIME, and get it the sort of overhyped coverage you believe it deserves. I'd be careful, though, because by tarring every saffer as endemically racist you're unlikely to be thought of as the poster-boy for the wondrous, liberal and entirely unprejudiced nation of Canada. Oops - bad choice of words on your part. "I appear to have inadvertently released a bullet into my own foot!" he cried.

Unfortunately I've not yet seen any empirical evidence of racism so I'm unlikely to change my stance at this time. Nevertheless, I've volunteered to alter my position in the face of it should some emerge so the ball is in your court.

Take care now.

^ Right. So do I.

I've looked at your posting history.

My statement still stands.

Rareboy, fyi I am an individual. My lack of posting is only because not that much cranks my chain, unlike yourself it appears. Some idiocy really pisses me off and I comment. This has been one such instance. I go with nadawon80's apt comment.
