  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Is America the hope of the world?

Nausea is as likely to give a green glow as envy.

Or maybe it's just terra verde

A Jesus this white ? No way. His tan Semitic color would actually be an obstacle to migrate in many countries nowadays...

With all the racists, misogynists and frauds who have won Nobel prizes I'm [STRIKE]completely[/STRIKE] not even the slightest bit surprised that that would be your measure for a great country. And let us not forget there's more than a country or two that are lagging behind because we raped the land, the people and the resources and left them to wallow in problems we created and refuse to acknowledge let alone fix. You don't get bragging rights in a race where you broke the competition's legs, shot them in the arm and have been slowly poisoning them with arsenic over the past few months.
Nonsense. What country is lagging behind because the US raped the land etc? Many countries are affluent because of our friendship.

No, the US is still the most innovative economy in the world. Cell phones for instance, new drugs and medical devices, the internet and the internet companies. We influence Europe and Asia more than they influence us.

Nonsense! For many years, the best cell phones were Swedish and Finnish. Now Asian brands are the best value for money. Per capita, my native little Belgium has invented more important drugs than the USA, and some other countries in Europe, notably Israel, can say the same. As for the internet: Tim Berners-Lee is British.

America is more of a hotspot that innovation gravitates to than one were it originates. America is important, but it tends to overstress its importance.

See how that works? To the glee of naysayers, both foreign and domestic, we can be anything and it will still be "true." We can choose to focus on the police state, the poor, the rich, the outsiders, the in-crowd, the stupid, the elite, or whatever, and we're all going to be right in some degree.

And, should the topic be another country less represented on JUB, we could also come up with a similar discussion of its virtues and vices. America is a great nation, and greatly troubled. It has been all my 56 years. It's a bit like owning a big house, or being in a long term relationship: there is a lot to enjoy AND a lot to work on.

It's our country and amusing that foreigners enjoy critiquing it above their own, especially those living abroad from their own country and yet still opining about American more than either the land of their domicile or the land of their birth. That pattern is actually common and discernible here on JUB when looking at who is unhappy with America the most.

I agree with everything in your post except the last paragraph I quoted. We foreigners, especially those living outside our home countries, will criticize our home countries much more than you could believe. Just not to you. You have no idea, when I was living in the USA, how often I praised "the way things work over here" to my fellow Belgians. And now I tell the same stories in Morocco.

The reason why we criticize America is because we love it. You won't hear us bitch about Russia because we don't give a fuck about the place.

That. And it is not said as America-bashing but, on the contrary, as a reminder: America is good enough as what it is, which has put it above and beyond other nations... the day America truly starts believing its essence is Christian, English, etc. or, even worse, the day it truly starts defending science or neutral PC as a frozen belief, a credo, instead of just implementing them, that nation will be dead.

Odd that anyone can call the U.S. the hope of the world, when we've got lousy highways, too-expensive medical care, ever-dropping job security, immense private debt, declining life expectancy, crappy economic mobility, incomes almost guaranteed to be worse than one's parents....

Because what counts is the force capable of restoring all that, or letting it crumble forever. Spain may have a more economically efficient and offering better care for people TODAY, but you can't count on it to remain so for the next twenty years, because it has been more a quirk in the history of the country, dependent of specific circumstances inside and outside the nation that allowed some inner forces to work... for a time.

Although I often wonder whether that is not exactly the case of the USA, only the its glory would span a couple of centuries, instead of decades, and then slowly start dragging and going down the drain of history.
