My hypothesis is that even the most openminded straights would rather not think about anal sex.

Quite a few of my straight friends have tried or would try it. And even those that wouldn't don't go EWWWW at the thought of anal sex. My personal experience of course. :)

Ultimately is there anything we can do besides saying "get over it?"

Yes, we can be visible. People should realise that there's lots of us, in all areas of life. At the same time, we can continue to show the world that being gay is not weird, disgusting or wrong. That our love is as valid as theirs. Swaying public opinion is a slow process, but I think we will achieve it. We've come a long way already.

I've often wondered why we as gay men are having such a hard time being accepted by the mainstream. I've come to think it's because of the "ick factor." My hypothesis is that even the most openminded straights would rather not think about anal sex. To them it's gross, gross in a way that's hard for gay men to imagine. We've turned an "exit" into an "entrance" and they can't wrap their minds around the concept.

Homophobes are homophobic for a number of reasons, I don't think it's just because of anal sex.

I've met plenty of non-homophobic straight people that aren't grossed out by the idea of gay sex or straight people that do anal too.

Whatever. The entire idea of someone hating us because they find that gross seriously boggles my mind. It's been around FOREVER. It's hot. It's stimulating. It's - yes - natural. Now bend over or fuck off.

I think that is a grand finale in their reasons but hardly the only one.
Most is cultural, upbringing, & peers
People who are different are always outcast.
You can see this is at a local gay club where certain clicks of guys certainly have plenty to say about those that don't fit into there accepted scene, appearance, actions.

But you know a lot of gay guys aren't so keen on anal too for the same reasons that straight people are.

Many heterosexual couples do anal but that fact keeps getting buried so few know how common it is.

ever noticed how present anal sex is in straight porn?

besides, it doesnt really matter, because as long as we have to be something were not to be accepted, were not accepted.

That's ridiculous. Straight men eat cunts, who cares.

It has noting to do with anal. Decent people don't care what other people do or don't do in bed.

It ain't about the buttsex.

I think there are many reasons that will be used for not accepting homosexuality; anal sex is often used as the "shock factor" from my experiences.

As I have shared with straight and gay friends, I don't want to be known as "gay" Tom any more than I would like to be known as "gay Tom who does his partner in the ass (or receives, depending on the evening)." Rather, I prefer to be known as "Tom" and I happen to be gay. Tom has a husband and he and Barry are a wonderful couple who are a lot of fun as well as caring individuals.

When I was married and trying to be "cured" of being gay, I didn't go into the office and talk about doing my wife's vagina. People assumed we had sex (and two kids probably confirmed we did on at least two occasions)...but it wasn't discussed.

I have shared with gay friends that perhaps we are too up front with sexuality which leads to discussions of "how." I also have a lot of friends that want it known that they are gay and then who they are but the most important identifying part of who they are is that they are gay; their name and everything else is secondary.

We have many caring and loving friends who do wonders in the community. We, too, try to do many of the same things. My hubby and I recently attended the wedding of one of his very good clients. He did her hair and also the bridesmaids and others in the wedding party. He told them his husband would be joining him and we sat at one of the front tables (we were the only openly gay couple although we noticed our gaydar went off several times and had lots of questions asked!)

We were totally accepted by young and old (grandma gave me a hug as did the mother of the bride and both dads and grandpa shook my hand and talked at length). We didn't sit and share anal sex stories any more than they shared vaginal. We talked about many things and left making a number of new friends (some of whom we joined later for drinks).

Barry also picked up a number of new clients! lol!

It is still not a valid excuse to deny a human there fundamental rights. Homophobia has been drilled so deep into the Psyche of hetero society. Hell a simple hug is enough evidence to label a person gay.

With our end goals being different, thus our method of reaching them. (keep the pun, it fits)

The difference in value systems is what shocks them to the core. That's where the whole "if you just had a good woman to do you right" notion cropped up.

It's not anal sex it's the bible people are using. Without that load of bullshit things would be different. The bible also says a woman who is not a virgin when getting married should be put to death. I sure don't see bible beaters outside wedding chapels holding up "Die whore bride" signs. People are just ignorant.

No. It's not "preventing" mainstream acceptance.

I'd argue we are gaining mainstream acceptance. The abuse of religion is preventing acceptance in some areas of the country.

Anyway it's used as a shock factor by the religious right to associate anal sex with only the GLBT community. Heterosexual couples engage in anal often. You would be surprised by the figures on how many guys try anal because they hear women raving about it/ their girlfriends love it. They're curious (literally and figuratively) to see what's so great about it.

As for the "ick factor. It's not gross and it doesn't hurt. When most men find out about the male G-Spot (as they already are or have) the "ick factor" goes right out the window.

There are lots of ewww-gross things that are not illegal.

Butt sex is used for shock factor, but I hardly think it's the most important thing.

To be honest, I think it is mostly repressed closet cases (i.e., clergy & politicians) seeking power that drive the whole gays-are-bad thing.

Sad, really. Screwed by our own people.

I think in certain respects we gay men are delusional. I DO NOT believe most straights are interested or empathetic towards anal sex. I remember a chat with my liberal, openminded sister about the topic and she was simply repulsed and refused to agree that there was anything positive about anal sex.

I believe the mere thought of anal sex leads straights to have visions and smells of feces. Most have no idea of anal preparation/cleaning and instead think we hop in there and start packin.' Remember that politician who used the phrase "wriggling in excrement" to describe what we do?

I betcha if our sexuality did not involve the anus, we'd be more accepted in the way lesbians are!

That's stupid. It sounds like you have your OWN issues with anal sex and you're projecting them onto other people. Lesbians aren't accepted either, it's true they have less of an "ick factor" because guys think it's "hot", but socially they're no more accepted than any other part of our community. If you're sister is so fucking liberal and "open minded" she wouldn't be repulsed and horrified of a totally normal human act, which has been going on FOREVER! And I mean hello, like others mentioned, it doesn't hurt, it's not gross, and I've ALWAYS wanted to fuck boys in the ass ever since I found out how I can have sex with another guy. Give me a break, it's totally part of being gay. I mean, they also call us cocksuckers, but do heterosexuals think giving fellatio is disgusting? (Well, some of them).

We should be paving the way for sexual revolution and more sexual liberation, not looking to oppressive, repressed prude heterosexist idiots for permission.
