Is 'black' mildly offensive?

I don't hear it anymore. Christ, even Rush Limbaugh calls them African Americans [edit: which is how i came upon this idea] (i've heard him several times on his show and he consistently calls them African Americans, so I don't think he's being cynical). Even the rednecks at my work don't call them black. I guess it's gone the way of Negro, and colored; terms now (properly)deemed ignorant. Anyone notice this trend?:gogirl:

It's less about the word than what people mean by it. When my more casual friends call me a fag I don't bat an eyelid because it's not meant as offensive. But if someone on the street screams "Fag!" at me I'll give them the more violent piece of my mind.

No. Also I have seen guys on here who call themselves negros so I guess some people still use that.

I should think that it would be more offensive to call black people 'African American' if they don't live in the United States. That's the problem with being Politically Correct. It doesn't always work.

I was once called whitey a lot by a friend of a friend of mine and I said to you him "Why do you keep calling me whitey? Would you like it if I called you blacky?" He and my turn (girl) friends (jokingly) pushed me down (I was sitting down already) and said "That's racist and offensive!" I guess it didn't apply to me. QQ

I don't get why some White people spend their time figuring out if they should call Black people "Black, African American or THEM"......Just a reality check folks...Black people like to be called by their first names once they introduce themselves to you..Is this not common knowledge to most people?

Common Sense must be on vacation for most Americans these days...Ever since we gained a Black President Ignorance has run rampant...HELLO...

If this was towards me, I wasn't being mean, that is what happened to me a few years ago. I never call anyone by the color of their skin. I believe in the "treat others the way you want to be treated" kinda thing.

Black is blunt.

I have thought a lot about this actually, same thing as white

When you say " You are black" there really isn't a way around that you know?

Its kinda funny

Please, call me black, because when I hear someone say "He was wearing a jacket and he was African American" I can just feel their desire to say "It was a black guy with a hoodie"

Call me "Black" and depending on how i feel.. i'd knock the shit out of you. I'm "Brown," call me Chris.

Personally, I consider the term 'African-American' to be truly offensive ... especiailly when used by ignorant USA media twats referring to Nelson Mandela.

As I said above, PC doesn't always work.

It's curious, though. They're American. Why label (differentiate) them by sticking 'African' in front of it.

I dunno, my dad still says n*gger. :~/

If you're in the USA your Dad still has freedom of Speech so he can say whatever offensive word he wants. Do you think for yourself or do you allow your Dad to think & speak for you?

If you prefer to call Black people "Niggers" go ahead and say that. Don't be afraid or ashamed to tell the Truth.

I never say African Americans.
That's sounds weird. I just say black.

Dykes
faggots
niggers
crackers
rednecks
spics
sand niggers

Those are my favorite words.
I call my Brazilian friend baby spic and he think's it's cute.

In Canada you're more likely to hear someone described as "brown" referring to south asian, desi, indocanadian, punjabi, etc. The population, especially out west, doesn't have a lot of black people historically.

There are more black-hued people now, but still not many north americans of african ancestry - they're recent immigrants and don't identify as a colour but as a nationality, so, somalis, ghanaian, jamaican, etc... South Africans too, but most south african immigrants in the last 20 years have been white.

Where on earth did you get the impression that I'm racist, just because my dad is?

Well, you brought your Dad into the discussion and left the door open about your own thoughts..Your Dad does not post here but you do. Tell us your thoughts..

If you are uncomfortable expressing yourself then forget about it...There's no point in playing a game of Dodgeball...
