  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Is Canada better than the United States?

Way to go spreading stereotype.

Tell me. When was the last time you heard a Canadian say 'oot' or 'aboot' except on Air Farce or CODCO?

In all my 58 years, I've heard it only twice: once during a Jimmy Flynn concert and once from a fisherman from Nova Scotia.

I was in Toronto for three days and heard it at least twice.

Anglo Canadians like to feel superior to their American counterparts, even though the only things that really sets us apart are : Kraft Dinner, Tim Hortons, Canadian Tire, and the Queen.

What i find ironic is that while Anglo Canadians try so desperately to set themselves apart from Americans, they bash Quebeckers for being so different from them.

I'll never understand the Tim Hortons love.

I went there a couple times when I was in Montreal for coffee or donuts and found it to be virtually indistinguishable from Dunkin Donuts.

I don't think we have Dunkin Donuts in Canada, which makes Tim's arguably the best and most popular doughnut shop in the country.

I've been to both and I like the food better at Tim Horton's and the donuts better at DD.

I think there are some TH's in Maine.

Free health care and equal rights for all under the law...Nothing more need be said

What? We share the same celebrities and pop culture.

That is really all we have in common with Americans. We're more secular, political system is different, weather for the most part is different, foreign relations are completely different, rights and freedoms are different, domestic issues are different, social attitudes are different, banking is different, immigration policies are different...the list goes on.

It's funny how Americans/Canadians are deemed so connected when in actuality we're quite different from one another. Remember Canadians, you aren't Americans...the United States of America is really a foreign country, folks. ..|

Just my 2¢:

Same and different. I find that Canada is more multicultural where people keep their cultural identities a little more. America is more of a big melting pot where people conform.

My background: I have lived in the large metropolitan cities in Canada & I have lived in large metropolitan cities in the US.

My best advice is to stop thinking about countries and borders as they are. Think regionally instead.

A

LOL how many threads of this does JUB need?

I'd actually like to hear from people who don't live in either of these two countries, but have been to both, to see where they'd rather live, because I have a feeling most Canadians are going to say Canada and most Americans will say the US.

I personally say Canada, because I find what -Callum- and BowtieGuy have said to be true. Also I don't think I could ever move to a country where I couldn't get married or adopt children. Just my two cents.

Maybe I'm the exception then because I don't think I'm superior to anyone based on their nationality and I love Quebec and Quebeckers! You guys are so nice! (*8*)

I ask because the older I get, the more I feel like I have nothing in common with the majority of Americans. I tend to agree with the global view that Americans are "useful idiots."

I'm wondering if perhaps Canada might be a kinder gentler, more enlightened version of the United States or is this simply wishful thinking?

No you're right :)

Its absolutely hilarious when i see these topics pop up from people who actually live with in the U.S. Its absolutely hilarious because they actually have the option to move far, far away to there dream land, yet they have so many excuses as to why they cant do it. If you don't like it here, pack your shit and get the fuck out. Its looking mighty crowed, and im sure you wont be miss. There is no greater place in the WORLD than the good ole USA. No place id rather be. I also find it odd how people always bring up other countries when your average American could give two shits about where they are and what they are doing. Americans are living out there own lives, maybe you should start yours.

(Now that i actually read the title, i will continue)
Nations with the most Nobel Peace prizes won:
1) United States 260
The United Kingdom (does not hold nearly as many in the second place) with just over 90 Nobel Prizes.
Germany currently holds 61 Nobel Prizes.
France and Switzerland hold 28 and 22 respectively.
Sweden and Russia both can boast of greater than 10 Nobel Prizes.
Netherlands, Denmark and Japan each hold less than 10.

Oh shit, i couldn't even find Canada on that list. Did you even see Canada in this just past summer Olympics ? Yea, embarrassing, i believed they walked away with a total of ONE gold medal in womens wrestling (HA).

The economy of the United States is the world's largest national economy. Its nominal GDP was estimated to be $14.3 trillion in 2009, approximately a quarter of nominal global GDP.

Today, the United States is home to 29.6 million small businesses, half the world's millionaires, 40% of the world's billionaires, as well as 139 of the world's 500 largest companies.
Need someone bring up Americans Academic rankings in WORLD Universities. You are not prepared. Should i bring up Americans superiority in terms of the media and pop culture. No, no its quite obvious.

American Supremacy Confirmed.....Waiting to see what Canada can produce.

Free health care and equal rights for all under the law...Nothing more need be said

Actually, under law, the Americans have better civil rights than we do, its just that our government respects our limited rights alot better than the American gov't respects their own people's rights.

You're only saying that cuz you want to get into my pants ;) But hey, there are exceptions to every rule ;)

IA. It irritates when I hear Americans brown nose Canada. If you think that country is so progressive...you like the sound of their laws better...you like the sound of their health care system better...etc., etc., then by all means, have at it. Hop on a plane or (if you're in Michigan like me) drive over the bridge and stay there. Have fun watching CBC and TVo.

Me, personally...while the US definitely has its fuck-up's, I am not at all attracted to what I've seen and heard of Canadian Life.

Oh, it's also so endearing how Canadians say "oot," "aboot," and "hoose." Sorry Canadians, I watch lots of HGTV (House and Garden Television) and I definitely hear the accent, especially from the host of "Sarah's House" and the host of "Holmes on Homes."

Neither Sarah Richardson nor Mike Holmes say 'oot', 'aboot', or 'hoose'.

I watch a lot of HGTV, too, and I've never heard those pronunciations on it at any time by anyone.

We do, however, say 'root' for 'route'. I'll give you that one. We don't, however, say 'VEE-HICK-cull'.

Canada is lovely, and not so plagued by right wing extremist bigots.

Whether it is "better" or not depends on the individual.

Ah, but that's because you are a Canadian. When Sarah says "house" it's not quite equivalent to the sound of "boot" but it's definitely not the American "howse" with a strong "ooowwww" sound. It's hard to write how Canadian's say their "o's" but trust me it doesn't sound American.

I know how we say 'house' and I know how different it is from the American pronunciation. It's much shorter and rhymes with 'grouse' unless you say 'growse'. 'Out' and 'about' also rhyme with the way we say 'house', but there is most definitely no 'ooo' sound except, perhaps, in the Maritimes.

You're only saying that cuz you want to get into my pants ;) But hey, there are exceptions to every rule ;)

Yes that is true but I've actually been to Quebec. I know only visiting Montreal and Quebec City isn't really representative of the entire province but between those two cities I don't remember meeting anyone I didn't like. :)

I am Canadian born and living in the US. I tend to agree with you but we are not all "idiots" Some Americans are descent and have common sense without being egotistical slobs.

I also have found in my 59 years that many Canadians have become very Americanized.

Canadians:
house
mouse
louse
spouse

Americans say all the same things as though it rhymes with
how
now
brown
cow

howse
maose (like Chairman Mao). Wrong <frown>
lawse (like the country of Laos I guess)
spawse.

BOOO. Americans, you're saying it wrong.

Comrad, there are plenty of places in the world better than the United States, just as there are plenty of places in the States better than anywhere else. Excellence is not an American birthright or an American monopoly.

And just because that is such a common American attitude (you really don't get Canadians who are that deluded about Canada) I would rather live in Canada and I encourage likeminded people to do the same. How do you decent proud but humble Americans put up with that kind of nationalistic chest-thumping BS? You'd be welcome here if you decide you've had enough of it. Or do you think you can win the battle down there?
