I expect that the US tactic in the upcoming CMUSA negotiations will be to divide and conquer...although some are suggesting that the US may try to figure out a way now to impose charges on freight going between Canada and Mexico passing through the US. Another take on the ill favoured and unliked US Ambassador's speech of recent days. Hoestra is either being disingenuous or really is staggeringly stupid. Or both.

“It's gaslighting 101,” Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association and member of the prime minister's Canada-U.S. relations council, told national broadcaster CBC. “You probably should get someone to tell him a little bit more about how to properly do Canada-U.S. diplomacy, but I'm not sure he'd listen.”

Volpe said Hoekstra “knows exactly what he's doing when he makes those statements. … This is his style. I don't know what his objective is, but maybe his audience is actually in Washington rather than across this country.”
