I've spent years here and yet it seems that recently the life has gone outta JUB.
Are its best years ahead of it, or behind it?
I think what you're describing happens with pretty much everything that's 'community based'. What gives JUB its 'life' are the people who frequent it, and how they interact with each other. (I'm assuming that) In the beginning, the forums were a much more friendly, intimate place.
The same thing happens with most communities; as they grow, the general atmosphere changes. It shifts from a small family of members, where it's more personalized and everyone knows each other - to a larger, more impersonal community wherein you're more likely to get baited or flamed by people you don't even know, and who don't even know you. Also, as HoodedRat pointed out, people will be less inclined to share the more personal aspects of themselves to such a large number of [STRIKE]strangers[/STRIKE] people. So it can feel like much less of a 'warm', friendly place.
That being said, there's tonnes of friendly, awesome people at JUB now - maybe it's just a little harder to find them these days?
I'm new around these parts, so to me; JUB is JUB, and the people who are active now, are the people who have always been active. When you've been around for a lot longer though, many of the people who were around years ago have moved on; nostalgia kicks in and you think back to all of the awesome people who aren't around anymore, and that can detract from the current 'experience' of the community.
Whether JUB's best years are ahead of it, or behind it, is subjective. Someone who didn't enjoy the experience years ago could decide to come back tomorrow, and could comment on how much the community has grown and how amazing that is.
Perhaps you're not getting out of JUB what you used to, and that could be due to a change in the community, or in yourself, who knows?
For me though, the best years of JUB most certainly lie ahead
