Is living below your means a deception?

"But at what point does it turn from living frugally to just outright deception?"

To me, it would have been a deception if the owner drove the rust-bucket to potential clients to provide estimates or to the job, but drove his BMW or new truck the rest of the time. But if a vehicle is only a means of transportation to him, then it is not a deception. My car is 12 years old and friends are after me to buy a new one. However, my drives fine, rides fine, and gets me where I need to go.

When I worked for others I drove old cars, I usually had two so if one went down I could get to the auto parts store for parts. Now at age 70 I own a lawn care service and have to have dependable transportation so I lease a new Ford F-150 every few years. My clients have complimented me for having good looking equipment. My mowers are (or were) new as well. You get one chance to make a first impression.
