IS MODERN POP MUSIC A LOAD OF cRAP?

I dunno....

Something happened in the pop music world from, say, 1967 thru 1977.

This must have been an amazing time, because that music never goes away.

Zeppelin, Floyd, The Doors, The Eagles, Stevie-era Fleetwood Mac, and dozens of others...

These catalogs go gold every year on their own, and are bought by kids whose parents weren't around back then. I see 13 year olds with Pink Floyd T shirts on.... Do you think any band that is around today will have that kind of longevity ?

I think MTV screwed up things up irreparably It was more important to LOOK good than to sound good.

Aside from DMB, Rusted Root and String Cheese Incident, (which are fairly
obscure) I can't think of any band that even comes close to the 'old days'.

I worked in purchasing for a record store. I heard that crap pile plenty of times to know that it was just someone bragging about how bad day be.

Now, Jasun I do agree with you to an extent about Notorious B.I.G.'s Ready to Die album. However, Tupac last few albums while still alive were still inspiring songs like "Keep Your Head Up" and "Dear Mama". However, you are entitled to your opinion, but I'm just saying.

Um, sure. The same way kids wear shirts/listen to Talking Heads, The Cure, The Smiths, etc. (80s), and Nirvana, Superchunk, Pearl Jam, Neutral Milk Hotel, Sleater-Kinney, Smashing Pumpkins (90s).. there will be some cult-band that the kids think are cool 10-20 years from now. Animal Collective, Radiohead, My Chemical Romance, Interpol, The Strokes, Liars, Deerhoof, Black Dice, Fallout Boy, Lightning Bolt, etc.

To Be honest, I think pretty much all of the bands you mentioned are really boring and dull classic-rock bullshit (Pink Floyd? No thanks...), but there's tons of music from that era and from even EARLIER that I love...

'Dull classic-rock bullshit' ??!!

Um.

OK.

Pink Floyd, probably just a 'flash in the pan', you're right....

I hate these stupid bullshit threads, some people need 2 get a life!!

 Its just soooooooo uncool to like Pop music huh? :-({|=

Which is weird when one considers that pop means popular.

Anyways, if you want good music you've just got to know where to look. Japan's a good place to start if you want a bit of a change, some of Gackt's poppy stuff is excellent and if you want something a bit rockier, you just look at other parts of his catalogue; Mirror, Redemption, stuff like that.

Most good pop music hides nowadays. It doesn't call itself pop anymore. Hunt through other genres, you'll find it.

This e-mail got sent to me close to two years ago. One of the things that I never bothered to delete. Somehow I knew I'd need it to prove a point someday, though this is only to reinforce that I agree with a number of posts above. FRANK

Decline Of American
Culture - Lyrics Then & Now
From Olivia
1-26-05

Hi Jeff,
You and your guests talk a lot about the decline of American culture, and a little research I did on the matter reinforced that point nicely.
I looked at Billboard's top ten of their 'Hot 100' songs (which uses both radio plays and sales to rank songs) for 2003. I summarized the theme(s) of each song in a couple of words and extracted a sample lyric. If the song contained any 'mystery lyrics' -- those written in whatever passes as 'English' these days, but which have no meaning to the average educated person -- I included those as well.
I then did the same thing for the year 1981, the year I graduated high school. (Since songs were written in 'real' English 20 years ago, there are no 'mystery lyrics' among those songs.)
The differences are profound. Whilst the 1981 lyrics wax poetic about love and relationships, the 2003 lyrics are an orgy of sex, violence and drugs. Oh, yes and a good helping of obsessive 'love.' A sad comment on the state of our culture, don't you think?
And before anyone protests that sex, drugs and violence were also themes in songs from the 80s (or 70s or 60s), let me just say that this little exercise was not meant as exhaustive research, but rather to show the differences in the 10 MOST POPULAR, MOST LISTENED TO songs for each year I researched.
Read it and open your eyes to where we are headed.

That I love you forever

Again, you've obviously never listened to Ready to Die. That, or you are incredibly dense. That album is so nuanced, so conflicted, B.I.G.'s wordplay and rhyme schemes are REALLY impressive, and it's a pretty harrowing and smart account of life in the inner-city. To try and boil it down to "bitches and 'hos" is just wrong on so many levels.

To be fair, I actually boiled it down to rhyming "Hootie" with "Bootie."

I'd like you to explain how the lyrics to "Hypnotize" are anything but someone bragging about how amazing they are, how they get away with crimes and how much money they make.

I should say, by the way, that I do like some present day pop music.

It took me a long time to get into it, but that last Madonna album was excellent. I also think that "Impossible Princess" by Kylie Minogue was brilliant and there's plenty of other pop bands like Goldfrapp and Ladytron and Shiny toy Guns that I think are a blast.

I also love Gregory Douglass, which proves anything is possible.

(Although Rap music hasn't seemed to have changed in over a decade.)

I think I just fell in love with you (*8*)

"Hyponotize" isn't even on Ready to Die. Plus, that song is supposed to be tongue-in-cheek and fun.

OK, yes, I know it's not on Ready To Die.

I still think that music is just stagnant and dull.

(and I'm not sure that was supposed to be "tongue in cheek")

Whatever, this exchange is totally pointless. Go on ignoring an entire genre of music because of stupid misconceptions and generalizations.
