Is Pokemon Go still a 'thing'?

Re: Pokemon Go is an accident or worse waiting to happen

^^

Yeah, the most recent tech revolution is potentialy dangerous for humanity. :D

Every new tech creation is potentially dangerous for humanity......

At least until enough idiots get killed/injured improperly using said bit of tech and they finally collectively gain enough wisdom to safely use it.

It isn't so much about the tech, but about the lowest common denominator, the idiots.

Re: Pokemon Go is an accident or worse waiting to happen

So what exactly is this new Pokemon app about? Haven't played a game in ages, but from the sound of it, you have to find certain Pokemon in real-world places, almost like virtual reality or something.

Re: Pokemon Go is an accident or worse waiting to happen

It is an AR game, Alternate Reality. Meaning that it is a game that uses the camera to make it look like the objects, in this instance, Pokemon are in the real world.

You basically catch Pokemon in the real world walking around and there are Gyms and Pokestops on specific landmarks. Which of course you fight at the Gyms. It is a real simple game, just like any other Polemon game just with the AR element.

Re: Pokemon Go is an accident or worse waiting to happen

One of our roommates just downloaded that app and is walking around the neighborhood trying to catch those little bastards. I can just imagine his head buried into his phone. No thanks, I'll stick to playing with myself in the safety of my bedroom.

And we will picture you playing with yourself in your bedroom.

Can't help ourselves.

Re: Pokemon Go is an accident or worse waiting to happen

I don't wear headphones while I'm playing it and I only bring my phone up to check and see where the Pokemon is in relation to me. I've seen way too many TIFUs on reddit about people fucking themselves up playing it so I'm super cautious.

Re: Pokemon Go is an accident or worse waiting to happen

And of course the world can't have nice simple things without people abusing it.

Why would they need the game to find victims? Couldn't they, like, walk down a street?

Re: Pokemon Go is an accident or worse waiting to happen

Natural selection. The smart people survive.

All the people are smart enough to understand the potential risks to their health/life. However, the blind flirt with the new, entertaining, technologies accompanied with the momentum of excitement sometimes, sadly, overcomes pure logic and even the instinct of survival.

I imagine victims have their head in a phone. Granted, I'm not sure how many people have their heads buried on a phone while walking these days. Being confronted aloneish in a park going from 'light fun' to 'oSHIT' most likely tends to get someone to fork over valuables. People talking on their phone aren't usually looking at the screen, either, I don't think.

Yea, but I guess there was the assumption that people playing the game will more than likely be alone.

Re: Pokemon Go is an accident or worse waiting to happen

^ Makes sense. I thought it might have something to do with money and being able to afford the phone and app.

Re: Pokemon Go is an accident or worse waiting to happen

It is one of many similar apps which uses the camera to give a background image upon which animated characters or objects are superimposed. Maybe it will be dangerous if you're playing it in the streets near traffic or possibly into some abrupt cessation of tangible terrain...

You just have to be aware of your surroundings. I wouldn't play it outside of my immediate neighbourhood just because I'm intimately familiar with the terrain. Idiots who walk around looking at it the whole time they're walking are the ones who are going to cause accidents.

Really, is it much different that pedestrians walking along with their faces buried in their cell phones with no idea of what is going on around them? That's why they fall down stairs or into water fountains or, worse, into traffic.

Re: Pokemon Go is an accident or worse waiting to happen

I watched the first couple three of seasons of Pokemon when it first came out. Saw a couple of the movies when they came to tv, and played the Pokemon Silver (?) Game boy pc version of the game what feels like forever ago... so kind of a fan, but not a fanatic. I can only remember a small handful of the characters names.

But... after hearing all the hoopla here and Facebook I was intrigued enough to download the Pokemon Go App. After a few tries learning how to toss the ball I caught a Charmander in my backyard. I could definitely see how it could get addictive. I should have taken a screen shot of it.

I can't see myself battling and evolving them, but could be ocd enough to want to collect them all.

How does it get in your backyard? Does another player put it there? And what happens if you catch one? What is the objective of the game?

To my understanding they just randomly show up wherever. As for the object of the game..... It is the digital incarnation of the trading card game of the same name, originally intended for young children, at least here in the US. But surprisingly it has found a niche of dweebs, nerds, geeks.... whatever you want to call them.

I can only assume they're randomly spawned. Some reading I've done states that they can be found more frequently in whatever their 'natural' habitats were (in the cartoon?). Aquatic ones near water on you GPS maps...

I assume for the hardcore gamers, catching, trading, raising, evolving, training, ... them all is the goal.
