Black scholar's arrest raises profiling questions

BOSTON – Police responding to a call about "two black males" breaking into a home near Harvard University ended up arresting the man who lives there — Henry Louis Gates Jr., the nation's pre-eminent black scholar.

Gates had forced his way through the front door because it was jammed, his lawyer said. Colleagues call the arrest last Thursday afternoon a clear case of racial profiling.....

Okay, so let me get this straight:
1) Police receive a report that two black men are forcing their way into a home.
2) They arrive, and the one men there refuses to identify himself, citing that he's only being treated as such because of his skin color.
3) The black man eventually showed ID, and was provide to a reason for why the door was broken down.
4) However, he kept yelling at the police officers,

Bearing in mind that the woman who called it in may not have been able to recognize the scholar (he had been away on business to China after all), and I do think that the police may have acted a bit rashly in arresting someone who may have been threatening them with a can, it does obviously raise an interesting question:

Is this a valid case of racial profiling?

If I shifted the colors, and you saw two white men try to force their way into a house, one of them go around back, and then let in the other white male, would you have then called the police on the two white men?

If you were the cop on the scene, and you asked for identification, and the white male refused claiming that he didn't have to because he didn't have to identify for whatever reason, how would you have handled the situation? That is, would you back down trusting the guy, or would you be just a bit suspicious? And when he showed proper ID, and you backed off, but the guy kept following, waving his cane, not backing down, would you not figure out a reason to detain the man (after all, he's not exactly demonstrating complete mental competence).

I'm also finding it interesting that the skin color of the two cops wasn't mentioned....

[And, yes, I'm discounting Counter's encounter as he wasn't actually arrested. Even then: If a robbery has occurred and you're walking around without ID, if the police are doing their job they're going to find you and be suspicious. It's interesting that it's not noted whether or not anyone else was held under suspicion...]

In essence, did Gates bring at least some of it upon himself, or does being a pre-eminent scholar allow you some stupidity? Is this a legitimate case of profiling?

And the award for Disingenuous Thread Title of the Year goes to....

Clearly there's only one right answer here.

I didn't know black people were so big in China.

Just a misunderstanding...no big deal.

On another note, what's with all the race threads lately? Is there a race war brewing around here that I don't know about?

No, it's the season for it. It passes eventually. Seems to be winding down right now. Slower than I have seen.

Usually it comes in like a storm, and goes away quickly.

Yes the race card is overplayed. But only because there is still far too much racism in the world. Its really quite funny (in a sad way) as we are all part of the human race. Unless some of you dropped to Earth from some of those UFOs that allegedly don't exist

Girl I can't wait 'til religious season starts. That's always a ki.

... what does ki mean?

EDIT: Never mind, I looked it up in Urban Dictionary:

"A fine looking individual with sexy dreads, who is a member of the Jaguar clan."

LOL naw, in gay slang ki = a kick (a laugh, a hoot).

I guess I should give a serious answer, of course it's overplayed. I've seen episodes of cops where somebody is driving a stolen car 30 miles over the speed limit and will claim they were pulled over 'cuz they were black.

One of the funnier moments, a man beat up his wheelchair-bound girlfriend (okay that's not the funny part) and when the cops tried to arrest him he wrestled with them claiming he was a martyr, he pounded on the hood of the cop car shouting "Martin Luther Kang! Martin Luther Kang!" I died. :rotflmao:

Good rule of thumb, when the cops catch you breaking into a house, even your own house, take a minute or two to make sure they understand what's going on before throwing a screaming fit. Cops don't like that.

And I wouldn't be surprised if nothing like this has ever happened before to Professor Gates.

But no biggie, let's move on...

...

i like how you two assume that the police officer was telling the truth.

In comparison to the "good ole boy" card, the "don't you know who I am" card, the "my daddy is so and so, just wait til he hears about this" card, and the "celebrity" card, then no, I don't think the race card is overplayed.

This is so odd, b/c I had an entirely different take on the situation. I guess it depends on which news station or which newspaper you happened to take in. I was under the impression that the professor needed a moment to find his ID and the cops were pissed. Allegedly they continued to question him even after he provided his identification and the professor even offered to call the university president to verify that it was his house.

I'm amazed that some people automatically side w/ the cops. As Robert Evans stated, "There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently."

No one wants to be the bad guy, or the cop who overstepped his bounds. No one wants to admit to acting on stereotypes. As people, we have a habit of believing what we want to believe, even if we witnessed the event or were a party to the event.

so, the best thing for the cops to do is leave. if indeed this guy didnt live there he would have been free to burglarize the house. what would have been so difficult for him to show the cops his id? my gut is that this guy would have balked at any thing the cops said or did. some people are just belligerent.

Yes, the race card is WAY overplayed. Affirmative Action is a double standard.
