I'm trying to better learn the latest updates to Google Voice.

I have had Legacy Google Voice for about 8 years. Then about 2 years ago, Google sent me an email telling me that I could no longer use the number for call forwarding (where people call my Google number and it goes to my cellphone, without me using my actual cellphone number). So I was content with keeping my Google number, just so I did not have to give non-family and non-friends my actual cellphone number. So basically my Google number would accept phone calls and go directly to my Google Voicemail. Then I always received an email to let me know that I had a voicemail or text message (from someone using my Google number), which I was okay with and I learned to check my email more often, as not to respond too late to any important phone call or text message I received.

Though I heard rumors (about 2 years ago) that Google Voice is going away, then 2 weeks ago, I received an email from Google letting me know that their Legacy Google Voice is going away in a few weeks. Yet reading about all of the changes they are making to their new Google Voice and the features they are taking away, I’m very confused.

Overall, do I have to do anything once they change my Legacy Google Voice to the new Google Voice? If not, will I still be able keep my existing Google phone number and continue to receive telephone calls that will automatically go to my Google Voicemail and also receive text messages, where I can continue to go online (via email notifications) to my Google Voice account to retrieve my voicemail and text messages?

This is one reason why I hate technology. As soon as they figure out how to make an extra buck off something, they change it and upend everyone's lives.

No. I use my regular voice mostly.

Peloso, I agree with you 100%. Thank you. I appreciate your feedback. ..|

I am in the same boat as you. However, the Google phone number I have I haven't used in about 4 or 5 years. But I have kept the number. When I got my notice a couple weeks ago, I went back into the new voice.google.com and the OLD google.com/voice webpages and tried to figure out the difference.

I THINK the way you use the number will still work. What will NOT work is if you are having your (your Carrier like AT&T) incoming mobile or landline calls automatically forwarded to your google voice number and THEN have that incoming call forwarded to a different mobile or landline, BUT those incoming calls will go to google voicemail. I got that information here:

Except posting here I don't type or swipe everythimg is voice command. Makes me feel like I'm on The Jetsons.

It appears mine switched on it's own. The logo looks different and in the menu there's a link to Legacy Google Voice. But everything is still working the same way it always did. It's still linked to my Straight Talk home phone number.

PrinceCory, thank you very much for your help. I greatly appreciate it. Most of all, thank you for that very informative link. Yeah, I remember that I received an email from them telling me when they planned to pull the plug on my call forwarding feature.

Yet I guess I’m going to start getting into the habit of not using it, because I get the feeling that later on, they are going to change something major or will end up taking the number away all together. I wish they would let us have the option to pay for the original service . . . as I would gladly pay up to $100 per year for the “original” legacy Google voice. As I really liked it that well, to pay for it . . . if the cost was reasonable.

Mainly for now, I’ll keep using it to give out as a number whenever I have to give out my phone number to a person or business that I’m not too sure about . . . kinda of like using my Google number as a junk email address of sorts (an email people use when they need to provide an email, but are unsure whoever they are giving it to will spam them or not).

Thanks again for your help. ..|

roadtripboy, thank you for your input. I appreciate it.

I basically see the same that you see when you go into your account, and I see the Legacy Google Voice option. However without having the call forwarding option (to have my cellphone ring or chime whenever someone calls me or sends me a text message on my Google number, the service is not much use to me anymore. :( However at least what I have left of the service, people can still call the Google number and leave a voicemail message or send me a text message, however I no longer am able to get notifications on my phone that I have a Google voicemail or text message. :( I have to periodically log onto my Google Voice account or email account to get a notification that I have a voicemail or text message (when the Google number was used).

Thank you again for your help. ..|
