Is this fighting homophobia or just being over-sensitive?!

Ive heard many gays make Brokeback quips too. Its just a modern cultural reference thats all. I don't know why some have to over analyse every little quip & then put so much weight & meaning onto it. A quip is just a quip. Chill out & save your venom for those more worthy.

Look at the person as a whole & their track record if you really want to judge them. Nigel has been in the entertainment world for many many years & has probably praised, helped & promoted numerous gay people. Even on this show which is choc-o-bloc with gays. So to start branding him a homophobe is just ignorant.

Girl boom. You make a good point but that doesn't change the fact that you're a cum-guzzling filthy slut. :p

so they're fine as long as two men don't *gasp* dance with each other?

if he thought they just didn't sync well he could've said it, but he had to include some cheapass quip about blades of glory and having men be men, and women being women. if he doesn't want to be seen as a homophobe maybe he shouldn't say such bullshit.

Oh lighten up! Jesus christ just how thin is your skin?

Some gays, like you clearly, seem determined to be offended. Personally, Ive got more important issues. The Blades of glory quip was SPOT ON btw.

As a gay man I prefer men to be men too. In dance AND in my bed.

Oh I'm such a self-hating homophobe!

I'm not very offended, but if I were one of the dancers you can bet your ass I'd make a fucking scene.

and I wouldn't say you're a self hating homophobe yourself persay, but you sound too caught up in assimilating and putting on a "manly" facade to really be secure with yourself.

either that, or you really are the gay version of a dumb straight guy.

His comments should have been reserved solely for their performance and not for a perceived lifestyle.

During the telecast, Nigel Lythgoe said: “I think you probably alienate a lot of our audience. I mean, we’ve always had the guys dance together on the show, but I’ve -- they’ve never really done it in each other’s arms before.” Shortly thereafter, he added, “Do you know what? I’d like to see you both dancing with a girl.”

Firstly, I'd like to know what his thoughts were when he corrected himself. Secondly, I doubt if they would have danced better with a girl. The straight guy even admitted that he tried it and couldn't dance with her.

I wonder what he would have said if these guys had performed on stage that night:

I'll be happy with marriage equality. The heteros can keep ballroom.

All those who keep saying that what Nigel said was not homophobic. You are ignorant.Because what Nigel said was basically homophobic.

I dont think that the 2 women judges are homophobic. But Nigel obviously have problems with gay dancers.I watch SYTYCD since the first season. So i saw gay dancers being insulted by Nigel in each seasons. Those of you who watch SYTYCD have possibly saw Nigel homophobic comments he made to gay dancers in the other seasons.

The so called straight man is most likely a closet case. There is no way a straight man would dance very sensual like that with a man.Mostly if its dancing with a gay man.

The whole gay ballroom thing was insulting for these 2 gay dancers. The Its Raining Men song was cliche and the Its A Man World song was insulting for these 2 gay dancers.

Most things that Nigel said was homophobic. These 2 dancers were good. Most of their dancing was good.Nigel compared these 2 dancers to the ridiculous caracters taken from the movie Blades Of Glory. This is insulting.

Nigel also said to these 2 dancers.Let's see the 2 dancers dance with girls. You never know you might like it.He was basically saying.Put a bit of straight in you and you could be better dancers.

When the 2 dancers fall.Nigel laugh at them.If it was a straight couple who would had fall.Nigel would not laugh. He would have said. Are you ok?

If you dont see how homophobic Nigel was.You dont know what homophobic means.

Everybody knows that most people who watch SYTYCD are gay men and women. So the alienate the audience thing that Nigel said was stupid and nonsense.

Does Nigel really thinks that most people who watch SYTYCD are straight men?

Straight men prefer watching wrestling and basketball.Straight men simply dont like dance shows as much as gay men.80% of men jazz dancers are gay.Theres lots of gay men ballroom dancers as well.

Nigel should be aware that the dance business is mostly full of gay men.Mostly in jazz dance and ballroom dance.

Nigel dont know what he is talking about. Each time Nigel insult gay dancers. He insult most of the audiance as well.

Come on now. The judge is full of shit AND homophobic. I thought what the dancers attempted was artful and courageous. I was getting into it, until the mishap. Yes, they are very similar in appearance with the identical costumes, but their personalities are quite distinct and that showed. The judge needs an attitiude adjustment. He was way out of line. As far as alienating the audience. A few decades ago, the same thing could have been said about interracial dancers. Fuck his homophobic closeted ass! He is FAR from masculine his damn self!

If your refering to Nigel telling some gay dancers they need to dance more masculine in certain types of dances, it is true, they do need to dance more masculine.

Especially in the ballroom dances where your supposed to be a masculine dominating man leading the dance. And that critic has been echoed by the other judges as well.

I don't remember too well, but if he has told a guy they need to be more masculine in some contemporary dances where you really don't have to be, I would be more inclined to believe you.

Also, where do you get your numbers and information from on gays in the dance world? While I mostly agree with you, you are throwing out some numbers.

**endless righteous babble**

Your post is full of assumptions & dodgy statistics. Nigel makes comments to gay dancers because many of them dance too effeminately. He likes male dancers to be masculine to a certain degree. So do I. He probably doesn't know their sexuality anyway so he is judging them on how they perform. If their sexuality is that obvious from their dancing then they are probably not dancing masculine enough!

Personally I do not want all TV presenters/judges to be PC to the point where they can't even make jokey quips about sexuality. Gay people make such such quips about straight guys all the time. Well it goes both ways.

I've found Nigel's attitude, (both here and in past seasons), about the dancers needing to be more masculine to be almost along the lines of "Eeeeew, too gay." No, he's never said that exactly, but his tone, facial expressions--they just suggest his dislike of anything that might be interpreted as gay. He is not just a judge--he is one of the main producers/creators of the show. He supposedly wants to bring all kinds of dance to the public, and yet when something like this occurs, he acts like the dancers have cooties. It's very similar to how his buddy Simon on American Idol has often criticized male singers who give off a strong gay vibe as being too theatrical or too "broadway."

I don't watch the show, but just from comments, I'm on the "he's a homophobe" side. Yes, ballroom dance is a hetero pairs sport, we aren't used to seeing two men dancing together; but it wasn't all that long ago that we weren't used to seeing people of different skin-colors dancing together, and now we think nothing of it. If they danced badly, say so; if you find it offensive, say so: but don't shove it off on the TV audience and then make a bunch of snide remarks later.

The main thing is, though, that GLAAD exists to yell every time something like this happens in the media. And if GLAAD, and we individually, don't stand up and yell "foul" over every little thing, nobody will hear us when we yell "foul" over a big thing...we'll be out of voice and out of practice. We, as different-from-the-majority people, are too close (for my comfort) to the Bad Old Days of hiding and persecution: we haven't yet earned the luxury of complacency.

This is war, sweeties, not a barn dance. Nigel Whoever fired a shot, it's our duty and right to fire back.

Homosexuality is not about acting, or dancing, effeminately. They are separate issues. We all know that many gay guys have issues with men who act camp or effeminately too. Nigel has never said he has a problem with guys wanting to fuck each other. That is what homosexuality is really about.

However, here are his Twitter comments;

"I hear I'm taking a beating on the web due to my comments regarding same sex ballroom I thought I was the most accepting of it on the panel?

The same sex ballroom guys did remind me of "Blades of Glory." However, I'm not a fan of 'Brokeback' Ballroom.

I am very sad the word 'homophobe' is being used. That is someone who hates homosexuals. I dislike effeminate dancing! Wake up and listen!

I believe overtly effeminate dancing destroys the opportunity for many male dancers to be supported. Being gay doesn't mean effeminate.

We have had same sex dancing on SYTYCD from Season 1. Last year Joshua and Twitch. Before that Mia's Prince's routine with Danny and Neil.

I am passionate about dancers and dancing. I am not interested in their sexual preferences only their dancing and performances. Offstage ??

I wholeheartedly apologize for my Brokeback Ballroom Tweet. It was insensitive, ignorant and stupid. I have upset a number of dear friends."

'Brokeback' is a very clear codeword for "gay", which suggests that all he deduced from their performance was nothing that pertained to the actual performance, but rather, their sexual orientation. And he used that against them.

There's obvious prejudice here.

I dunno... some things just can't be done non-traditionally. Could it be as simple as that - the dance just didn't look right being done by 2 guys?

There was that Swan Lake a few years back, where the corps de ballet was all-male. That was just odd - anyone know if it's still going?

"Brokeback Ballroom" ... *giggle*

I think that's funny, because it's ironic and absurd. Ballroom dancing, full of grace and pomp, is hardly of the same grubby-rugged-macho-male-studly-kinda-thing that bronco-busting is. Can you imagine two cowboys trying to salsa in their shit-kickers and muddy jeans?

I'm glad GLAAD called "foul" on it, since it was said publicly. However, I hope we're not heading toward a world that's so PC that even irony and absurdity isn't tolerated.
