Isaiah Washington Fired from Grey's!

I posted on a similar thread already in HT, but will reiterate my joy in learning that this guy is gone ... I will enjoy Grey's even more now.

Wow, Paris Hilton and Isaiah Washington poetic justices all in one day ..|

The arrogance of some people to be put off by their not rescinding it, and then using it as example of how the black community is so "homophobic."
It wasn't the awarding that highlighted black homophobia; it was that his nomination wasn't thrown out. And, yeah, once the remarks were made, and made public, he shouldn't have been able to win the award.

Says a lot when a known homophobe wins the award...Definitely explains why Noah's Arc wasn't nominated...

Probably, but who cares? When was the last time GLAAD or the gay community as a whole was up in arms about an incident involving racism that didn't have anything to do with homosexuality? Communities tend to pick and choose their own issues and battles. The black community isn't thinking about gay issues/homophobia, just like the gay community isn't thinking about black issues/racism.

Except that a lot was made of the black community of their alliances with Asian and Hispanic communities.

If the situation were reversed and TR Knight had called Washington the n-word, and then GLAAD gave him an award for his acting performance, I really doubt that too many in the black community would be all the more offended by his getting THAT accolade.
You really don't pay attention to the news, do you? If Al Sharpton is ticked over Paris Hilton getting out of jail, imagine what would have happened if he had something real to sink his teeth into.

Besides, it wouldn't have happened. Knight would have been canned almost immediately and would have had any nominations nuked. Heck, it would have been interesting to see if he would have had any career after that.

It would be insignificant in the greater scheme of things. Black people care about the GLAAD awards about as much as gays care about the NAACP.
Obviously, so not the case; it's interesting to see the waves because Noah's Arc didn't get a single nomination, and that Washington did.

By and large, the gay and black communities aren't friends/allies, so it always mystifies me when I see gay people be shocked and complain about the attitudes that some black people have about gays...because on the flipside, blacks generally aren't that concerned about the attitudes gays have about them. It's like you go your way, and we'll go ours.

And isn't that homophobic in and of itself? As well as basically stupid; wouldn't it make for a more effective if both groups united? Wait...that would be intelligent. Can't have minorities fighting together, now can we?

Throw in there the Hispanic community as well (AND IM HISPANIC MYSELF), whe seconds the black communtiy on Homophobia.

What really pisses me off, is that some gay people prefer their communities homophobic views just cause of their races struggles and stupid shit...

Myself, I disown the Hispanic homophobic community, they can rot in Hell for all I care.

You are too ignorant for words.

You know what, with all the people dying everyday all over the world of hunger and war, I really do not care what happened 40+ years ago in a country that´s not even my own.

But if you want to educate me, then I´m open for it.

It might sound nice if racial-ethnic, women, gays, handicap, etc., etc. could all got bind together to fight the man, simply because they are all oppressed 'minorities', but it's a rather naive thought IMO. All communities are individual and thus have their own personal concerns and agendas when it comes to surviving oppression and gaining wider acceptance. The black community isn't going to get up in arms about Matthew Sheppard's murder and the gay community isn't going to get up in arms about Rodney King's beating.

That's because they're two entirely different levels of events. Matthew Shephard's death would have been tragic no matter what the actual context (you still have a young person who was the victim of a hate crime), as opposed to King's beating (change his skin color to white, and it's a COPS video). You just can't compare them...

Sorry, I'm just not seeing black people as the "downtrodden minority" that they used to be, not when I've seen black people complain of being treated racistly (is that a word?) when they were being treated fairly right up until they went ballistic (a guy was told to take his bike to the back of a light rail tram, and started yelling at the security guard even though he standing right between two signs that backed the security guard). And I won't mention the incidents that a former room mate of mine mentioned that weren't racist until she got into someone's face.

I'm just starting to hit the point that racism exists, but not to the degree that blacks say that it does. On the other hand, I'm seeing blacks being racist and homophobic, and that it's acceptable behavior. You'd think that they would have learned something about tolerance...

You my friend are racist.

BTW you are NOT black so you will never understand the "black struggle" in this country..

Also you can NEVER compare the N word to faggot.. too much history involved with the N word.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with comparing the N word and faggot. Do you think the word faggot appeared in the English lexicon over night? Plus for a comparison things don't need to be identical they need to be similar (thus comparison) and the connotations are similar, the N word says "A. You are black. B. there's something negative or wrong with you because of that." and links those two statements. Faggot says "A. you are gay. B. there's something negative or wrong with you because of that.

B. Thank you for pointing out that I'll never be black. Maybe I should point out something equally obvious and true to you. You'll never be white. So you'lll never understand what it feels like to read post after post of people accusing white America (and therein yourself) of being racist bastards when there is no indication what so ever that race has the slighest thing to do with the issue.

You bitched about Shona Rhimes 'diverse' cast only having three black people. Well I've got news for you when the show premiered out of it's core cast of 9, 3 people were black. That's 33%. Two seasons later with a core cast of 12 it had the same three black cast members, down to 25%. (It did however in these additions add one hispanic character). According to the latest census numbers only 12.9% of American's are black. So what the hell do you mean by saying that it ONLY has three black cast members? It's a very simple concept man. There are less black people in the US. Thus there are less black actors in the US. Thus there will be less Black actors on a show in the US unless the casting people deliberately attempt to tip the scales to one race regardless of talent.

WHOA... pot calling the kettle black here.... if anyone on any of these boards is racist my friend it is definitely you....

And you can indeed compare the two words because both have hateful connotations... and neither should be used at all by anyone....

You know, it's unfortunate his use of an anti-gay slur gets all the press, when the original news reports focused quite heavily on how he allegedly grabbed Patrick Dempsey by the throat when Dempsey defended Knight in the argument. If he did do so, then calling someone a name and lying about it on national television pales in comparison to physical assault. And if that is what happened as reported, the coupling of a hate-filled word with violence must have made for a very tense set in the months since then.
Amen to that. Well said.

I could care less what color he is. His character was an asshole, he himself is an asshole, so I'm glad his ass got the axe.

Him being black has absolutely nothing to do with the whole thing... He was rude and unprofessional and that's what made him lose his job. Seriously, grabbing people by their throats and calling them names? Try doing that at your work and see how it goes.

I could care less what color he is. His character was an asshole, he himself is an asshole, so I'm glad his ass got the axe.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think he was fired because of the color of his skin. Isn't the writer black also? I read somewhere that they had probloem with him with some other show that he was in to in the past.
It's gonna hard for him to get a job now. Being a minority in a hit show in Hollywood just doesn't happen that often.

Says who....you? Are you a racial minority and can personally attest to that, or are you a spectator giving your own perspective on the matter? Hell, even if you are a minority...you're personal experiences with racism wouldn't be the be all, end all on the matter.

It's very ignorant of you to try to editorialize the degree that which racism may (or may not) exist.

I ***really*** recent someone who isn't a racial minority trying to downplay the existence of it. I'm of Arab/Dominican descent on my dad's side, and have experienced it enough in my nearly 22 years to know that it does still heavily exist....no matter how subtle, hush-hush or negated some people try to make it out to be.
That's fair; I think it's ignorant of you to call someone racist when racism doesn't apply. Note that I'm not saying that racism isn't still around; I'm just saying that I'm getting tired of seeing pop up just because someone happened to not be white.

Does a black woman have a right to call racism when she wears a party dress to an interview for a job for which she isn't qualified for and doesn't get the job? Or is it simply because she didn't have the right qualifications and dress inappropriately? How about a Latino kid not getting hired because he showed too much attitude while filling out an app (telling his friends he'd rule the place, and making passes at all the girls)? Is it the attitude or the skin color?

I'm also getting tired of being called a racist just for saying, "Hi!" to someone. Racism does go both ways...but let's ignore that because white people are never the victim of racism, right? The Holocaust is just a fantasy, right?

My issue with Washington is that he received an award for being a shining light in the black community after calling a person a "faggot" and not apologizing for it, as well as causing someone to come out of the closet sooner than he would have wanted. This when the black community slammed Imus for saying "nappy headed hos" (something that's apparently not a racist/misogynist statement when the person is black). Rather than coming down on Washington with anything resembling the same weight, they gave the guy an award (and there was plenty of time to take back the nomination). Yeah, you can point out his steller acting ability, but if the only thing he has going for him is that he's on a major show, how does that make him a shining light, especially given his comments.

Do I think racism doesn't exist? No. I think it does. But...as long as you have people getting awarded for it as did Washington, it's going to stick around...

God your posts are always funny... But you are absolutely 100% INCORRECT. Talk to anyone who actually has some "sense" and they will tell you what word is more offensive.. even if that person isn't part of that race. The "N" just has more history to it.. it comes from a very very sick past.

Well duh!!??! I know that their are more whites in this country than blacks. But it doesn't mean that they should be excluded from appearing in movies and TV shows.

Washington was fired because he made himself a problem and forgot how competitive acting is. Nothing to do with racism.

His firing will help the next guy think twice before being a homophobic jerk.

So it's all to the good.

You are the most ignorant, bullheaded, racist I have ever seen....

There is no heirarchy of hate.... calling someone a nigger is no better or worse than calling someone a faggot, spic, kike, or towelhead....

Every single one of those words are words made from hate of a certain people they are ALL offensive words... and no one is worse than the other....

Every single hateful ephitet is created because of the way someone was born who might be different from the way a bigoted hate monger was born...

You... of all people... being born black and gay... should not be so quick to jump to the defense of hate mongers at all... no one in their right mind should... yet here you stand... accusing everyone else of racism while your avatar is the biggest racist on the planet....

You should be ashamed of yourself...:grrr:[-X:grrr:[-X

Well duh!!??! I know that their are more whites in this country than blacks. But it doesn't mean that they should be excluded from appearing in movies and TV shows.
Re-read the post. It noted that the show in question was at 25% black (more than twice the national average). Obviously blacks were not excluded. In fact, blacks do rather well in terms of TV (they are usually at 1-2% more on TV than they are in real life).

However, I wish they did better in terms of leading roles; unfortunately, with TV panicking due to decreasing numbers, that isn't likely to happen. Throw in the confusion from the NAACP and other groups, that have actually been going after the smaller stations (such as CW) because they don't like that they've used the black audience to give themselves a decent audience, and then switching to a more white line-up (the tactics have been a bit...aggressive). Throw in that black-headlined shows tend to do lousy in the ratings (note the Taye Diggs drama a few years ago), and TV is actually encouraged to limit blacks to ensembles and background characters.

On a personal note: The NAACP didn't exactly win friends when it decided that writers could only write characters of their own color back in the 90's, and threatened to boycott any show that didn't have minorities and the writers for them. This caused a certain whitening, as the studios couldn't enough writers of color (no scholarships or other encouragement for black writers, and only a few studios (such as Disney) have minority writer programs).

PNII: I think that the problem is that people are tired of seeing black people as a bundle of problems instead of people when it comes to TV. There always has to be at least one episode where they deal with racism, and it usually feels forced. So instead of having fun, they always have to dread the "OMG! He's black!" episode. It's okay to be who you are, but a balance needs to found...

I think we need an all-black country-western group...

BTW, spense2: You have an interestingly phrased post...

The word "nigger" is an offensive word to me as a white man because it was used to subjugate a race of people as they were hanged and/or burned to death for the color of their skin.

The word "faggot" is an offensive word to me as a gay man because it was used in conjunction with throwing homosexual men onto the flames to be used as kindling for the burning of witches.

Both words are incredibly offensive because they conjure images of the struggles and deaths of those who they were used against.

No one is getting a prize here for proving which word is worse. Those who died with either word as one of the last sounds they heard are shamed by the immature bickering that goes on in this discussion.

What I find most interesting about your response is that it was 100% claim and 0% logic or statistic. It's ludacris. You can't just decide one word is worse than the other. Hate is hate. Period. That's like someone saying that anti-semitism is worse than hating black people because there's more 'history' too it. Stupid and lord knows you'd be the first one complaining about that statement if it were made. And you'd have every right to say that because that statement is just as stupid as the one you made. HATE is HATE. No one hate is better or worse than another. I can't wait until something comes and knocks you off your ass and into reality and out of your race-centric world.

You complain about a show having ONLY 25% black cast members... well what do you want? What's the right magic number? There isn't one. It's just what happens to fall out of the flop and in this case it was three black cast members. There are three times as many black characters as hispanics or asians... should they complain about how they're being shafted?

I can't believe they fired him... I know what he did, but I love his character.... him and christina were good together... I was really looking forward to those two getting back together later... now I am just depressed
