The backlash begins. Reading the world press today, virtually every independent commentator/pundit/expert/reporter agrees that Italy did not deserve to win the WCup final.

Added to this, there are now questions being asked about what Materazzi said to Zidane to provoke the French captain's reaction. This story will run and run. Materazzi could be a worried man.

And to add insult to injustice, some Italian politicians have suggested that, as Italy have won the WCup, the clubs involved in the corruption charges - Juve, AC Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina -should be granted an amnesty. Lippi, the Italian manager will welcome this cover-up. I wonder why? See:

The judgement on these clubs was expected today. The silence is deafening. There is something rotten in the state of Italian football, and that was illustrated last night.
 
Reuters reports today that Materazzi denies calling Zidane a "dirty terrorist."
 
Regardless of what Materazzi called Zidane it was his (Zidane) fault for reacting the way he did.

Anywho! I actually really like Italy's team. They played well. I especially liked their captain, Fabio Cannavaro. Delicious.
 
What are you talking about. Italy deserved to win! Great team, great soccer, great skill.

And the sad aspect to all this is to see, what was once considered the best football league in the world, Serie A, reduced to a side- show. No one is interested. No major broadcasters in Europe bothers with it. And the win last night ain't gonna change that.

No talented footballer from any other country would want to go near Serie A. The ones who are there at present will be desperately trying to get out of their contracts.

Serie A will be left with idiots such as Materazzi and Di Canio, (who has admitted publicly he is a fascist), and the racist, anti-gay, fascist supporters who are present at most Serie A games.

A shame Zidane missed his target.

It's important to use some simple thinking here, and not be so critical and cynical. Why be cynical about it? Can't just enjoy the game?

Well, give me a break. Actually I can relate. Today, a woman in a hurry at a mall ran into me from behind, I couldn't see her coming, and as she pushed past me, she turned around and gave me a dirty look! Look at that video - it's absolutely clear that Materazzi was busy running down the field, and that his elbow hit the opposing player as he ran up behind Materazzi. In the world where you don't have to be unneccessarily cynical for whatever reason, and you are fair and use your judgement, that is called an accident. Sorry, no bad guys.

On the other hand, running up ahead of an opposing player, turning around, taking a step, using your soccer legs to push forward, bending your head down and using it as a battering ram - that's not only deliberately cruel, and a selfish indulgence at the expense of your team, but actually quite dangerous. We can be glad it wasn't worse, as it was when Todd Bertuzzi took out Steve Moore. This could have been a great tragedy, and had Zidane aimed for the face, it would have been bloody. Soccer IS a sport with grace, and there's no reason to try to excuse or explain that head butt.

Zidane was worried about his mother during the entirety of the match, because she is really ill at the moment.. its nothing to do with him being called a Terrorist!

- My thoughts are with Zidane!! He lived a GREAT career! - He will always be respected in my books.. i only wish they won the final this year!

Not that it's anything to do with this thread, but some respondents seem a little confused. Every team in the World Cup can only use players who hold passports, and are citizens of the country they play for.

All Brazil's team are Brazilian. All Italy's team are Italian. Etc etc...

Where the Brazilian, Italian or any other players work is neither here nor there. Beckham works in Spain, as does Ronaldinho. Shevchenko plays in Italy. Henry plays in England. Etc etc...

More to the point, interesting to see that Lippi resigned today. Why would a national manager resign after winning the World Cup?

He was called a fucking terrorist DURING the game. OF COURSE people will defend him. Not to mention the fact that he was awarded the Golden Ball. There is more talk about HIM than Italy's pathetic victory, FOR A REASON!

Is this the only way Italy can win anything??? By calling other players terrorists and insulting their mother/sister??? Sports has its own rules and ethics, and if you're going to bring insults, you dishonor the very sport you play.

As Zidane said...."no provocation, no reaction." Materazzi is lucky a head-but is all he got. It could have been worse.
