The problem really is that everyone keeps looking for a single answer to a complicated problem that was created over a long period of time. Instead of trying multiple solutions, they just fret over single solutions and why they won't work, then they end up doing nothing.

Something to keep in mind: two-thirds of gun deaths in the US are suicides, not mass shootings. In 2017, that was 23,854 deaths by self-inflicted gunshot wounds, including 20 veterans per day.

Assault weapons pose a unique problem, though. The rapidity of the death and injury is something that should have been addressed by Congress before the Assault Weapons Ban was allowed to expire in 2004.

Yes, criminals will not follow laws, but if those laws make it harder for some jackwaggon to go pick up a weapon of mass murder on a whim and carry out their plan...then great. Could there still be shooting with hand guns or single round rifle?...absolutely, but they would have the carnage of the past week.
