It's not the guns.

It may go to Abbott's desk to give some members of the Legislature cover to say that they "did something". Abbott won't sign it unless the billionaire spigot dries up.
I doubt it will get that far. Those Trogs aren't looking for cover. They are going to run with the story that every shooting demands more guns, not less.

The national media isn't covering what is happening at the Texas Capitol and whether there's protests going on like there were in Tennessee.

From what I'm hearing from voters who are of college age, there's a big wave of young voters who have had enough of the guns and the gun nuts. If that's the case, there may be a big overreach on the left and the pro-gun and voter-suppression groups are going to be on the defensive. 🤞

There were protests last time too, and the time before that...

Every time we go through this, people say that on the news. Nothing has ever changed; it just gets worse. Come next year, there they'll be, every other 'pub on the TV caressing their guns, spouting their same old shit. I hope somehow this time will be different, but don't bet on it.

Every time I think the gun nut generation is dying out, there are younger politicians showing up to replace them...usually with Christmas cards of their families where even the 4 year old is toting a Barbie AR.

I wish I had confidence that the younger Americans are ready to say enough....

Focus on the under 30 crowd. Most of the people being elected are still over age 30 (the youngest Senator, Ossoff is age 36). The youngest member of Congress, Rep Frost, is 26 and he's a mass-shooting survivor and active in Newtown.

The Parkland generation are in their last years of university. As more and more of these kids who grew up doing active shooter drills hit voting age, they're going to be pushing for gun control legislation.

If you read the reporting on Cleta Mitchell's speeches that she's been giving at Republican confabs, she's specifically targeting things like eliminating on-campus polling places, getting rid of the use of student IDs as valid voter ID, requiring university students to vote in their home district, etc. The Republicans know what's coming.

The gun lobby has lots of cash, they'll just buy politicians willing to be bought. It's what they always do. These days we have stupid shootings over petty shit so often none of Y'all are even paying attention anymore.

It's not "criminals," and "crazy people," it's Cletus who got drunk and pissed off that Goober fucked his sheep kind of gun violence. Nothing says Texas these days quite like getting into a firefight at the Wal-Mart over a parking spot.

It's dead. The deadline is today and it failed to get on the agenda. The legislature ends its session on the 29th, meets only every other year, and nothing more will be added after today.

What was it that Molly Ivins used to say? That y'all would be better off if the Texas Legislature met every 140 years for 2 days instead of vice versa?

Bigot murders another Black person, no one gets arrested.

Isn't it comforting to see the "...lynch the n*****..." laws functioning as intended.

...At this time, while many call for the woman’s arrest, Woods stated the department must determine if Stand Your Ground applies. “That law has specific instructions for us and law enforcement, and any time that we think or perceive or believe that … might come into play, we cannot make an arrest,” he noted. “The law specifically says that, and what we have to rule out is whether the deadly force was justified or not before we can even make the arrest...”

No doubt she'll end up a big bigot hero going all around the country bragging for cash.

The sorry hussy shot through the door. Stand your ground can't possibly apply in this case.

Today in "It's not the guns"... high school graduation mass shootings.

Two of the seven people shot outside a theater where a high school graduation ceremony had just taken place in Richmond, Virginia, have died, the city’s interim police chief said.

Those who died were two men – an 18-year-old student and a 36-year-old attending the graduation – the interim chief, Rick Edwards, said.

A suspect – a 19-year-old man – has been detained, and police intend to pursue charges of second-degree murder against him, Edwards said.

I doubt it goes to trial. He will likely have a public defender who will tell him to take a plea deal. He ends up with life in prison either way because Virginia doesn't have a death penalty.

That will depend on how the law is written. Was he attempting to murder them? Or were they just in the wrong spot at the wrong time? It's a matter of intent, 2cnd degree murder is not usually pre-meditated, it's generally considered a passion or impulse crime. Which might mean that harmed bystanders are some kind of assault, not murder - especially since they aren't dead.

A lot is going to hinge on what the primary charge ends up being. It may be 2cnd degree murder now, but that could change. Was he trying to kill just anyone in his path, or was he looking for a specific target?

Watch the Trogs on the right rush to demand greater access to guns as the "solution."

This y'all?

Texas lawmakers’ response to the state’s deadliest school shooting is a sweeping piece of legislation that mandates armed personnel on every campus.

But how all school districts will find and pay for security officers — along with other required safety upgrades — could be challenging. The Legislature barely raised the amount of money per student it will provide campuses to implement such measures...

State law already allows other school staff — who are not sworn officers — to carry guns on campus through a “marshal” program and a “guardian” program. Chosen teachers and other campus personnel can go through training and bring weapons on campus, but districts don’t disclose who is armed.
