In that classical music thread did you ever feel as though we were two small voices crying in the wilderness?

It's kind of hard to compete with threads titled "what song are you listening to right now?" and almost every forum has something similar.

Yes, definitely. I'd check an hour after posting and the thread would be on the second or third page. I had to just post anything sometimes just to be able to find the thing the next day.

And yes, congrats on your book. That is very exciting news. Good luck with the publishers!

I just started the most obvious opera thread even neophytes can contribute to. Favorite sopranos. Hurry before it disappears to the second page or the next poster says James Gandolfini.

What I see that SPEAKS volumes is the unfortunate tone this thread took. It's exactly why the vast majority of site members avoid (like the plague at times) the CEP subforum.

The tone began in the original thread that was imported over here along with the names of two specific JUBers who were being denigrated in the original thread named for them.

Even aside from the pile on gangbang, last I looked, it's against forum rules to post gratuitous personal insults against specific JUBers, like calling them trolls. I assume there's a good reason for that rule, but maybe there's not and the rest of us should do the same. Would that be fun, Mike?

I think that the original premise wasn't that bad; there are a number of members that are only narrowly known by their forceful and sometimes strident opinions on various subjects. Sometimes you are left thinking that if you understood the person better, you'd understand their positions better.

Now sometimes people of extreme opinions don't want anyone else to know how their ideas about the world they live in have been shaped. It might give their 'enemies' an opening; might reveal some vulnerability that would lead their opponents to having an edge.

I think the original premise was excellent. Except specific JUBers shouldn't have been named in the thread title or OP; and somebody should have called out the gangbangers and told them to knock it off.

That's true.

What's funny, though, is how few people actually pay attention and bother to get to know others even when the information's there -- or maybe it's that they ignore what they don't want to know and make up what they want to believe. In any event, some people carefully hide stuff that most people wouldn't notice or use anyway.
