Gee and here I thought songs were about singing. Silly me, lol. Besides at one time she DID sing. Now its this whisper shit and you have no clue what she is singing about.
Her career is sadly headed toward dancing with the stars. Janet needs to dump Jermaine Dupree from producing her. The two together in the studio do not do good work.
Janet is nolonger setting the standard on her c.d's. She is instead chasing trends and falling flat on her face. She should regroup and find a producer that can get a decent vocal out of her. As well as finding her some great dance/pop songs.

I guess I should ask the obvious question. CAN she sing anymore? It's not unusual for singer's voices to deteriorate slightly (or a lot) as they age, and Janet never had the most powerful pipes in the business to start with. Is it possible she's whisper-singing now because that's all she's capable of doing?

I never minded her singing style. Yes, its has gone down to a whisper since the 90s, but it suited the material she was singing about.

It's that coo-singing that annoys me. Janet has never been a great singer, but she is much more tolerable when she actually opens her mouth and sings with a little force.

You make a great point, Lex, but I do not believe that's the case with Janet. She's just released two songs, Make Me and HeartBeatLove, where she's applied her voice differently. It's an application issue, not a health/aging issue.

Too boring. I don't think she will ever have a classic ballad again so she might as well stop trying. In the meanwhile, I love her latest dance track :) Can't wait for her next record

Knowing what I know from the spoilers I've read and trailers that I've seen for Why Did I Get Married Too?, the feel of the track and it's lyrics fit the the movie perfectly. As for Janet losing her voice, she sounds fine on "Make Me" so there is no problem in that department. We just now live in era of American Idol/X-Factor where people think to you have to practically howl at the moon to sing a song.
Also, I think that ever since it become the "in" thing not to dig Janet's music that even if she puts out the perfect track it will never be good enough for some. Considering a lot of the garbage that's passing for pop music and topping today's chart, Janet's latest outings aren't so bad.

Janet has been doing music for about 28 years now. During her "peak" she set the trends , achieved more than most and outlasted many. But every pop artist has their moment and it's pretty rare to keep having multiple peaks that far into your career. There comes a time when you have to let a new generation have a crack at setting the trends. I just enjoy that Janet still likes to release music because she really doesn't have to as she's already achieved success in the music biz.

^ Good for her, but why not follow it to the logical conclusion? If she's simply putting out music for her core base of fans, that's totally fine. But then, in essence, the pressure is off. She doesn't have to gun for the top of the charts, or worry about how her songs will be received. So why do a theme song for a Tyler Perry film?

That said, that might explain why Jermaine keeps producing her. It means she can spend more time with him. She might not even care (so much) about the end results.

That's exactly right...Janet can only do wrong things now, that's why I said "and the hating begins..." I've actually seen the movie this song is for (I previewed it when I went to the Oprah show with Janet on it. Catch me in the audience April 2nd!) The song fits the mood of the movie completely. One thing people wanted was for Janet to head back to "her roots" this takes her back to Again and Every Time

She has said continually, she does this because she enjoys it. She has NOTHING left to prove to anyone, she's done what she's done. Also, this is the theme of the Tyler Perry movie because she's starring in it.

I think her problem is that she's uninspired. I don't think that her vocals have deteriorated. I don't think that she necessarily needs JJ & TL back (although I suspect that a reunion is inevitable). But I do think that she needs a theme that she can write and sing and dance passionately about.

Control = declaration of personal independence.
Rhythm Nation = social consciousness.
Janet = declaration of sexual liberation.
Velvet Rope = candid exploration of the depths of her desires (with some social consciousness mixed in).
Since then = a few gems, but mostly chunks of coal.

Sounds as if her primary motivation these days is to make music because she thinks that's what she should be doing, not really because that's what she wants to be doing.

Control, Rhythm Nation, Janet, and Velvet Rope are four of my favorite albums ever, though.

80k: nice theory, but it doesnt quite square. damita jo and 20yo had very obvious themes. former was about her sexuality again, only more clumsyly done than janet and velvet rope. latter was like a retrospective, with many tracks echoing former hits.

Hmmm. Your message "squares" quite nicely with my meaning. All For You, Damita Jo, and 20yo--as I hear them--weren't explorations of anything new for her. I think that those albums were primarily commercial overtures. Again: uninspired.
