Janet Jackson's Post-Success Popularity

First off, this is not an anti-Janet Jackson post. Heck, I even saw her live at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas five years ago. ..|

Just an acknowledgement of something I have noticed: Jackson seems to have a huge fan base amongst the under-30-crowd here lately even though she is in the worst career slump of her entire career. :(

Let's face it: This decade has not been good to her. She hasn't had a Top 10 hit since "Someone To Call My Lover" and that was six years ago!!! And this is the woman who unleashed 18 Top 10 hit singles in the 1990's -- that was more than Madonna!

It's obvious that exposing one of her breasts on live TV in 2004 sabotaged her career. But a lot of my pals -- especially those in the 18-24 demo, seem to put her up on a huge pedestal, thinking she can do no wrong.

Even in her 80's heyday ("What Have You Done For Me Lately?," "When I Think Of You," etc.), do I not remember so many fans out there. Has anybody else noticed this puzzling phenomenon?

Re: Janet Jackson's Post-Success Popularity

Her post-hit popularity has nothing on brother Michael's, I think.

Consider. His last number one hit was "You Are Not Alone" in 1995. He's put out ONE album of new material since then - in 2001 - which had two very modest hits with "Butterflies" and "You Rock My World". And yet, whenever he'd hold some press conference, or go in to testify at his latest trial, there'd be all these KIDS there! Holding signs that said "We love you Michael" and whatever. Who the hell ARE these kids? Are there ten-year-olds who actually wear out their CD copies of "Off the Wall"? My theory is that THAT's where Michael's money really went - he spent it all on hiring children to make signs and wave at him everywhere he goes. And that's somehow almost as creepy as what he was accused of in the first place.

OK, Janet.

Her new material isn't as good as her old (IMHO), and it certainly doesn't do as well. But it continues along the same path she's been on since...oh, janet at least. The "I'm free to be me and sexy" sort of thing. She's playing the same role - perhaps not as well, but she's grown comfortable in it. And whereas people aren't pulling out Damita Jo to listen to over and over again, it's like these albums sort of solidify her position. Nipplegate notwithstanding, she hasn't embarrassed herself on record yet. The worst thing one can say is that she's coasting, and there are plenty of people who don't mind coasting along with her. Toss that in with the sudden "it must have been so cool in the 80s" vibe I keep getting from people, and it starts to make a bit more sense.

Re: Janet Jackson's Post-Success Popularity

Very good take on it, Lex. So Janet is coasting?!? Maybe if Madonna's upcoming fall album tanks, she'll get this new found "it must have been cool in the 80's" vibe? Hehe.

Re: Janet Jackson's Post-Success Popularity

I agree with you: "She's not what she used to be". I'm a huge fan of her music, and I find her album "The Velvet Rope" as one of the all time best R&B albums.
Janet needs to reinvent herself. She got stucked in some "same old, same old" and his boyfriend/producer Jermaine Dupree did a rather unimaginative production on her last album "20 Y.O". Chances are we will still hear from her in the years to come. The big question is: Can she ever top herself again?

Re: Janet Jackson's Post-Success Popularity

I don't anticipate hearing Janet "top" herself again. I mean, yeah, more power to her if she can. But to me, all of her best work has been a partnership with a sympathetic producer. Take "Black Cat" and "Again". "Black Cat" was a surprisingly effective rocker (helmed by Jellybean Johnson), and "Again" was a delicate ballad with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis producing. In both, the producer sort of nudges her into new territory, but without overwhelming her. In both songs, she sounds like Janet Jackson, not like "a Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis production featuring Janet Jackson", if you will. It seems like the current crop of producers are more interested in making an album with "their" sound, and gluing the vocalist on top. Sometimes this is fun for a song or two - the Jim Steinman-produced "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" by Air Supply is still jaw-dropping - but for a whole album, it's a waste of talent, I think.

And at the risk of threadjacking AND pissing people off, that's something I've not liked about the last few Madonna albums as well. Even the best ones (like Confessions) sound the producer's doing most of the work. The one that had the biggest "Madonna" imprint on it was American Life, and I think that was mostly due to her rather clumsy lyrics. I don't have really high hopes for her new one, but I'd really like to hear a "Madonna" album again. :)

Re: Janet Jackson's Post-Success Popularity

I Love Janet!!, I actually Prefer Her Music To Michaels Music, but i still love MJs Music as well, ya i do see alot of fans that are younger, my niece absolutly adores janet and shes only 7, her favorite song is the Pleasure Principal, who knew!

Re: Janet Jackson's Post-Success Popularity

I think with Janet shes been there done that. i LOVE her to death but she needs to get rid of JD producing her tracks. yes he has hits with Mariah and others but he needs to say away from Janet on her albums. there was ALOT of songs he cut out of 20YO that would of made that album a SMASH HIT. and most of those songs would of been awesome singles with awesome air play. shes having some new people working on her album and has a new record label and LA Reid is right behind her. i DO feel she will have her comeback. i read an article her album is to drop in 2008

Re: Janet Jackson's Post-Success Popularity

Yes! I agree with everyone above. Janet has nothing else to prove, but the fact Janet can have a fan base that didn't even know her peak days are great! All the talk about how the last two albums could've been different, etc. It is what it is. Be happy that JD is not gonna be on the next album AT ALL! Thank god! L.A. Reid is gonna be doing it since she just signed over to Island. Hopefully Janet will go back to adding a message in her songs again. Check out this performance:

Re: Janet Jackson's Post-Success Popularity

As a member of the under-30 crowd I think the reason is that a lot of young people are now familiarizing themselves with Janet's entire career. I remember in 2001 I saw her MTV icon and I was totally blown away. I was born in 86 there were a lot of songs that I didn't even know and fell in love with, and that was the beginning of my love for Janet.

It may seem like all the young people are in love with what Janet's doing now, and that may be true to an extent (because she may be in a slump, but her music is still better than a lot of stuff that's out there now) but I know from being on her message board that a lot of young people are really into her 80's nad 90's music.

She has a youthful appeal because of the way she looks and the way that she sounds now-a-days to youngn's do get drawn towards her.

I think the reason that young people put her on a pedestal is because no one else does anymore. Since "All For You" critics and people that were fans of hers in the 80's and 90's have been giving her a hard time because of= the super bowl and her music etc. So for us I feel we give her all this credit because a lot of our memories of Janet is people saying that she's past her prime. So it makes sense that we feel the need to put her on the pedestal.

In turn, for the older crowd that was there during "RN1814" and "Control" you guys remember the days where she was at her height and she had all the commercial and critical success in the world, so to you guys you've basically 'been there, seen that' when it comes to her. We have not becuase we really didn't live those eras. We are just familar with these songs and albums being classics, not current hits.. I don't even remember 'Control' and 'RN1814', and I barely remember the 'janet.' era b/c I was only seven, and I didn't listen to her. So the only eras that I vividly remember have been 'velvet rope', 'all for you', 'damita jo', and '20 Y.O.', and only one of those albums was critically acclaimed and had seen Janet as the icon. "All For You" is when people started to doubt her. So three out of the four albums have placed Janet in a more modest light.

I hope this makes sense, lol. :):)

Re: Janet Jackson's Post-Success Popularity

I think Janet has taken the whole "sex kitten" thing as far as it can go. It was fun for awhile, but I want to see a different look from her. I want to see her do something provocative- and not is a sexual way, lol. She used to be neck-and-neck with Madonna. But Madonna has kept things moving, kept things interesting, ALWAYS giving us a new look. Why does Janet seem so stuck?
