Jimmy Carter, dead at 100

No, but I used to do that with JUB names as a good-humor jibe until they created rules to forbid it. Since names here are made up euphemisms anyway, it seemed harmless to corrupt them for humor or lampoon.

Which is fine as long as it's good natured, but I guess there's always someone who can't play nicely or someone without a sense of humour.

In other news, the BBC has a funeral schedule:

^ On that note, here is one from a year ago that rings true:

This photo was taken in 1965 - the year I went to school with white kids for the first time.

It turned out to be the most joyful experience of my life. Everyone was so filled with excitement about landing on the Moon and the wonders that we would see in the 21st century.

The Carters could easily have been the parents to some of my classmates. I enjoyed going to school each day to be with my new friends.

Public Participation in Atlanta

President Carter's remains will lie in repose at the Carter Center in Atlanta for mourners to come and pay their respects from 7 p.m. on Saturday until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7.

The motorcade will depart the Carter Center at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday en route to Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta (northern suburb of Atlanta) where it will board Special Air Mission 39 en route to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

Traveling to the Carter Presidential Center

Those wishing to pay their respects MUST take the MARTA train to King Memorial and ride the FREE shuttles to the Carter Presidential Center. There is no parking at King Memorial Station. Bicycles will not be allowed at the Carter Center during this time.

Free bus shuttles will depart from King Memorial Station every three to five minutes around the clock beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4 through 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Note that you will be subject to search at the Carter Center and any prohibited items must be surrendered and will not be returned.

BAGS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THE SHUTTLES OR AT THE CARTER CENTER. (See the link above for additional prohibited items.)

Please expect to wait for prolonged periods of time. There will be many mourners given the deep ties the President maintained in our state and the warmth with which he was regarded.

James Earl Carter Jr.

1924-2024

39th President of the United States

The Center was filled with lots of nice exhibits about the work of Carter and his presidency.

The MARTA train was extremely clean, and there was a MARTA employee riding in my car, about half way back. The car was almost empty at 5:00 a.m., and I was going to tell her how nice it was for the train to be clean, but then she jumped off for a minute somewhere along the Green Line and back on with her pants down below her ass, having apparently crapped between the dock and the train, or literally taken the piss. Good times. I saved my comment on cleanliness.

West Lake was empty in the pre-dawn hours:

But there were signs of life, or at least carcasses:

There were many Secret Service attending and there was a changing of the guard right as we queued up to view the casket, which was very ceremonial.

They disallowed photos in the Center, even of the exhibits, but did provide commemorative cards as we signed the guest registers. It made an apt souvenir:

Were you on TV? I noticed there was live broadcasting on YouTube.
I hope not. I don't photograph well -- the pics look just exactly like me.

:rotflmao:

I didn't see any camera filming in the room. It would be kind of ironic if they broadcast mourners while forbidding mourners to take pics in the other parts of the Center.

At any rate, I'm not going to look for it. It was nice to go in person, and I'm back home again now. Was only gone 25.5 hours total, just just a quick trip.

Quick trip? I view an hour as a quick trip, not a bit more than a day! But then that may just show how little I get out...

Interesting photo on the card. I noted they attribute it to Yousuf Karsh. Off topic, but I remember my family going to an art gallery to see a Karsh exhibit. There was something that grabbed me about his photos. It's nice they chose something like that, rather than just some standard stock politician photo.

There are many fine photos of Carter in the montages and exhibits at the Center, several very candid shots when he was a boy or teen or young man.

I thought it was a really quick trip, considering it's a 3.5 hour drive each way, plus I stayed overnight in a hotel, ate at a favorite restaurant for dinner, and another for breakfast. Also got to see another episode of Dune Prophecy on HBO2 at the hotel. I had seen several at the hotel when I went to Arkansas last month for a trip. I really think the series lives up to the expectations of the fans.

And, I was back only a day later to take care of my Coco. Was very satisfying as trips go.

With the snowstorm in DC, it will be interesting to see how the visitation and services are attended. I'm sure the flight will not have trouble, as it is flying from an Air Force Base, so could land at another if not landing at a public airport.

It's more a question of whether mourners in the region or from abroad will be able to get there. I guess Congress and government members will be able, regardless of Joe Public's limitations.

It is nice that Georgians were able to pay respects earlier, rather than having to travel to DC, all the more with Carter being one of the common men, not from some American pseudo-royals or uber-rich.

The eulogies were touching, especially those of the grandsons today, and from Andrew Young.

President Biden also was calm, poised, and in command in his remarks, with no sign of confusion or addling.

The Navy Hymn was sung again, beautifully, then Amazing Grace, a bit stilted, and finally a duet of Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood singing John Lennon's "Imagine".

Jason Carter was so good, it immediately became clear some DNC kingmakers would be knocking on his door. That said, it didn't help eloquent young men who wowed us all at several DNC conventions, did it?

It took me quite a while to recognize Dan Quayle in the VP pew, and I never did see Cheney.

I didn't get to watch but the first two hours before I had a meeting, but I also didn't see any woman speak on his behalf, which was a bit shocking considering his championing of women's equality.

He was sent off with all the honors due him. Well done, U.S.A. for the care.

He looked like the stoneface he always has looked like to me. He'd be a fine candidate for Mt. Rushmore's foothills if he only merited it.
