Joy Behar: "Isn't it racist to call it 'Black Friday' ?"

Elisabeth Hasselbeck was too quiet.

I wonder how much of Joy's schtick is for real. I saw her going after Ann Coulter on "The View" like her veins were going to pop, but then when she guest-hosted on Larry King, she and Ann were yukking it up like the best of friends.
Or, it could be that Joy is simply an idiot.

Joy had a show on WABC radio in New York about twenty years ago, and occasionally I would listen to it. I could only take her in small doses.

She now has a talk show in the evening. I don't know the station, only found it while channel surfing.

She was as disingenuous now as she was back then.

Not a big fan.

It's a little silly -- but I'll still take someone worrying TOO much about offending others over someone who doesn't give a shit about offending people, like Hasselback.

In general that's not a bad notion. We do need people out there who don't care, though, to remind us all that we have that liberty. After all, in the long run, a liberty not exercised is a liberty lost.

Absolutely. I'm not advocating enforced sensitivity - just recognizing that Joy is at least trying to be respectful in a time when so many find respect beneath them.

Let's not Joy bash. She missed this one. But, no matter if you agree or disagree with her she is normally the best read of the bunch. The fact that i have watched that much of the view just scared my and mad me puke a little.

Now "Cyber Monday" is clearly in insult on cyborgs though.

Definitely.

That brings to mind the two years I spent living in a house of Christian guys at OSU. I could not at all believe the way these guys who were raised in 'evangelical' Christian homes had no respect even for their house mates -- they'd walk into someone's room when no one was there and just "borrow" things; they'd leave messes for others to clean up. At one point I actually told the bunch of them that if they were being graded on "see how they love one another", they'd get a F-minus.

One of them said I should try living in the dorms. To cut to the chase -- in comparison, the Christian guys were a good example.

One point really burned me: for all the pious talk of no foul language, when it came to gays the rules splintered badly. At that point I wasn't 'aware' yet, but because I called them on it I got labeled a "fag".

I liked their team the first year. In what they have now, though, you're right -- Joy is generally a bright spot.

To be honest, I always thought it was called Black Friday because of how much of a shit show it always is for the poor retail people. I sure wouldn't want to work retail on Black Friday... People are assholes to retail staff under the best of circumstances.

I had a friend who worked in the stock department of a big department store. His job was to keep the shelves filled until supplies ran out. He told me their supervisor had gotten them all those back support rigs, just for Black Friday, because it was the highest day for lower back injuries in that job.

He hated his boss there, the guy above the supervisor. That jerk hadn't wanted to approve the back supports, until the supervisor painted a scenario of the mess that would ensue if one of the stockers got hurt and they couldn't find anyone else to come in.... The boss couldn't be stirred to care about the health and safety of his employees, but when it came to risking the smooth operation of his floor, it was a different matter.

My friend said if they'd known about what the boss had said before they actually got the supports, it might have been "black eye Friday".

My mom knows a guy in a tax accounting/accounting firm that does books for a lot of local businesses. Back before computers, she says that even for a lot of small retailers, the accounting folks were using a lot of red ink right up until Black Friday.

Yes Joy, call that shit how you see it girlfriend! :D

*does a happy dance that Whoopi and Sherri weren't the ones to ask this question*

Whoopi is 'way the heck smarter than that. She's biased on some things, but I've never seen her that ignorant.

God bless ignorant people. If they can somehow live their life that way then good for them I say.

Whoopi "Rape Vs Rape-Rape" Goldberg? Pshhh.

There's a difference between not being able to think of the word you want, and sort of making something up to try to get the idea across, and being so totally ignorant of what something like Black Friday is. Whoopi wasn't very articulate there, but she wasn't ignorant.
