Didn't you like Cometti's coomentart when Ablett and a Sainter dived through the goal posts, and he said synchronised diving?
And the previous Friday night when Syvis (Melb) smothreed a kick and Cometti said Sylvia's smother (Sylvia's mother).
Dennis Cometti is THE BEST football commentator in Australia and the absolute master of the quick quip! Some of his famous one liners ...
"The wheel's still turning but the hampster's dead".
Years ago when Dean Kemp was dacked, Commetti - as cool as you like, with no change in tone simply said: "Kemp, debriefed".
"Barker to Barlow, the Hawks are attacking alphabetically!"
In a match between St Kilda and Fremantle, Burke (Saints) and Wills (Freo) started running after the ball when it was kicked into an open space. Cometti's comment ....
"Burke and Wills mount an expedition after it, but it ends in disaster - the ball is out of bounds and we'll have a throw in."
When there were about 10 players all lying on top of the ball and the umpire didn't pay a free kick, Cometti said: "It's like a Melbourne tram, everyone is piling on but no-one is paying".
After Liberatore goes in hard for the ball and gets a cut above the eye for his troubles: "Goes in optimistically but comes out misty optically".
During a Port/Freo game when the Carr brothers ran into each other - playing for different teams and having the same guernsey number: "Oh oh problems for the umpire, a two Carr collision, both with the same numberplate".
A player who kept jumping too early: "I bet he starts the message before the beep."
More memorable Cometti-isms .....
"like Pavarotti on a skateboard"
"like a Saint Bernard in a heatwave"
"like a group of crazed Amway salesmen"
Cometti once described a player signalling for the ball as: "waving his arms like they're playing
My Sharona."
He described a player sweating "like Marlon Brando eating Thai food."
He once described a kick as a "Rock Hudson kick ... it looked straight but it wasn't." And another kick was so high it "ricocheted off the Hubble telescope".
If anyone knows any more, please add them! Perhaps we should start a whole new thread in honour of the man!
