JUB AFL Footy Tipping Competition

^^ (*8*) (*8*) ^^

4/8 correct for me AGAIN!! :grrr: :grrr: Oh well, at least I'm consistent ..... *sigh*

Heartiest congrats to atrophic_poker, our Round 7 winner. After some pretty ordinary tipping in Rounds 1 - 6, it was great to see him getting 7/8 correct this round.

rugbyusa .... our clever Yank .... continues to head the leaderboard.

See below ....

Well, My beloved Saints went down to Geelong on the weekend ... pity because a win for St Kilda would have been good for Robert Harvey on his special night.

And, as John has lamented, James Hurd going out at the beginning of the Essendon/Carlton clash probably contributed towards the Bombers defeat.

I selected St Kilda and Essendon to win ... but they were the only two I got wrong, so my score for round 7 is 6 out of 8.

They were pathetic. No other word for it. But give the boys 2 seasons and we'll be kicking arse again! And Sheeds says we can still make the finals with a good 11 straight wins. I have started to worry about him and his grip on reality. He's still a God but a slightly tarnished one at the moment.

But we hang in there and live for next week.

My tips, 2 out of 8, the tipping comp said it was Poor tipping. I tipped like a girl. :-(

What a dismal round for me - 3 out of 8!

Does anyone know if there is a tipping competition for synchronised swimming? If there is, I may have a go at that.

Didn't you like Cometti's coomentart when Ablett and a Sainter dived through the goal posts, and he said synchronised diving?

And the previous Friday night when Syvis (Melb) smothreed a kick and Cometti said Sylvia's smother (Sylvia's mother).

Dennis Cometti is THE BEST football commentator in Australia and the absolute master of the quick quip! Some of his famous one liners ...

"The wheel's still turning but the hampster's dead".

Years ago when Dean Kemp was dacked, Commetti - as cool as you like, with no change in tone simply said: "Kemp, debriefed".

"Barker to Barlow, the Hawks are attacking alphabetically!"

In a match between St Kilda and Fremantle, Burke (Saints) and Wills (Freo) started running after the ball when it was kicked into an open space. Cometti's comment ....
"Burke and Wills mount an expedition after it, but it ends in disaster - the ball is out of bounds and we'll have a throw in."

When there were about 10 players all lying on top of the ball and the umpire didn't pay a free kick, Cometti said: "It's like a Melbourne tram, everyone is piling on but no-one is paying".

After Liberatore goes in hard for the ball and gets a cut above the eye for his troubles: "Goes in optimistically but comes out misty optically".

During a Port/Freo game when the Carr brothers ran into each other - playing for different teams and having the same guernsey number: "Oh oh problems for the umpire, a two Carr collision, both with the same numberplate".

A player who kept jumping too early: "I bet he starts the message before the beep."

More memorable Cometti-isms .....

"like Pavarotti on a skateboard"

"like a Saint Bernard in a heatwave"

"like a group of crazed Amway salesmen"

Cometti once described a player signalling for the ball as: "waving his arms like they're playing My Sharona."

He described a player sweating "like Marlon Brando eating Thai food."

He once described a kick as a "Rock Hudson kick ... it looked straight but it wasn't." And another kick was so high it "ricocheted off the Hubble telescope".

If anyone knows any more, please add them! Perhaps we should start a whole new thread in honour of the man! :king:

Thanks ozguy! I have had a s**t day and was ready to blow a fuse....until I read your post with Comettiisms. I loved them all, especially the two Carr collision.

It hasn't been such a bad day after all.

Some more:
From a Crows/Melb game when two ruckmen jumped a bit early for a contest:
"Premature elevation".
None of the commentators picked it up as well.

From the same game: Wheatley had a big 3rd quarter. I think he had 9 disposals after a poor game the previous week. Dennis said, "I don't mean to get political, but Wheatley had a downer last week, and these possessions are helping him forget."

From a Hawks/Carlton game:
"Its like a bad sobriety test,no-one's going in a straight line"
Then,as Carlton kick in:
"Teague,short to the pocket,to Betts who's short,in the pocket"

From a pre-season game:
"No 9-Pointers tonight. We're playing off the ladies tees."

Of andrew lovett on Anzac Day:
"his game not gelling as well as his hair"

Carlton Blues player kicks the ball into a team mate:
"He's done a Dick Cheney"

Dermott (Ch 9 c0-commentator who never knows when to shut up) suggests fans expect more than 15 mins effort from their team.
Dennis "Unless you're coached by Andy Warhol"

Re the crows awful first quarter: "they must still be on Adelaide time, 30 minutes behind."

Lot's more around

I suspect it has something to do with the application of shoe polish ("Nugget" brand) to the genitalia of new members, whether they be sportsmen, military persons or students. It has also been known to happen to males who are about to be wedded. It is akin to bastardisation and hazing. Very funny according to some people. I think not.

That very thing was done to me by my scaley mates on my "bucks night" (many, many moons ago now! ;) ) .... It was not a pleasant experience, I can tell you! :grrr:

I too have just placed my tips for the weekend. I hope I have done better than last week's miserable three!

Melbourne
Adelaide
Dockers
Collingwood
Swans
Lions
Saints
EAGLES
Six away teams. The game of the round should be Swans v Bulldogs

PS Sorry John, I have not tipped the Dons to win - I cannot see them beating the Eagles!

I'm with you, John. The Weagles don't travel well and they also don't have a good record at Telstra Dome. So fingers crossed,

BOMBERS TO WIN.

My tips for Round 8 .....

Demons
Crows
Cats
Dorkers
Swans
Smears
Saints
EAGLES ..| :gogirl: (!)

My predictions:

Melbourne
Adelaide
Fremantle
Collingwood
Bulldogs
Port
Saints
BOMBERS!!!! ..|

So what about THE PIES, THE PIES? Was that a demolition job on Geelong or was that a demolition job on Geelong? Non Melbournians who did not see the Channel 10 telecast should try to see this game on Fox Footy or edited highlites overseas - the demolition was done with ruthless efficiency. It would be an education to watch it.

But bugger Richmond, who allowed them to win today. I was going all right till then.....

Good Old Collingwood Forever........
