JUB MEET NEW YORK 27-28 Sept 2013

Ah well:(but perhaps another time as Ron says. Timing or budget just may not be right for a lot of people, though I do wish we can get a few more. Maybe this could be a test run for a bigger New York related meet in the spring, but even with a few coming in and a smattering of locals it should still be a great JUB weekend!

Thad1527 is coming in early SAT - from Pennsylvania!! - and suggest breakie at City Diner near the Owen Grundy Park.

Weekend forecast: Mostly sunny to sunny, High around 70 degrees.

Looking at all the forecasts the whole weekend should be lovely, low to mid 70's during the day, cool and comfortable near 60 at night. We really would like to see as many locals who can make at least part of it as possible. Feel free to PM myself, palbert, or frankfrank for any additional questions or suggestions, if you need our cell phone# just request them in any PM. Let's make it a great, memorable JUB weekend in the Big Apple!:D

Wish that I could make it , but this weekend is simply impossible.
I know it's going to be a great time...autumn in New York...how could it miss? :D

Someone post pics so we can all live vicariously through your fun.....:D

i cant wait to see how sausy that sausy is.....

^ I'm quite the saucy one, FPNY!

I can't wait....frank, palbert and Rickrock will be here later today and we're having dinner later after we meet at the hotel frank and palbert are staying. Rick's coming in a little later so we're still not sure he'll be able to join us for dinner tonight, but we're hoping. To anyone who is going to attend, most likely locals by now, don't hesitate to shoot a PM to me with suggestions and palbert as well once he gets in later(some of you may well have his # too and you can request mine if it's convenient as well). Wish it could be bigger but it still is going to be a great JUB weekend in the Big Apple!:D

So, what's the plan for Saturday afternoon? Anyone know?

Yes, it was dinner with all parties mentioned - including rickrock, who got here with more than an hour to spare. So far it's already been fun. We "went Cuban" for dinner tonight. Palbert brought up Cuban food, and Sausy already knew that I like Cuban food (and so does he), so rickrock was willing to experiment and he was pretty pleased too.

FPNY, I should send phone numbers for those who are here, in hopes that you can figure how to meet us on Saturday afternoon as you mentioned. That will probably be the most "populous" day of the meet. I'll send Sausy and my phone #s. I hope you can meet us.

[post delayed until I know more...oops]

Palbert had to leave, hopefully only very temporarily, I'll PM Sausy and rickrock. I'm not saying much more here; I just hope all turns out OK. I'll let him tell me what to post, or he'll do so. No, this has nothing to do with the JUB meet - the same thing would have happened in Maine if he hadn't come.

Great news.... just got up and read what happened, got your PMs, too Frank so all caught up. Great dinner last night to welcome you all here and so glad palbert will be okay. See you guys down there in a bit!

Well whoever is running this now, (confused) P.M. me details on the meet.

We had a great time Friday, and we look forward to great times with whoever can join us Saturday, as well as possibly Sunday morning/noon (or thereabouts) for breakfast or brunch. We spent most of the late morning (after initially getting together for the Friday part) on the Jersey City waterfront near the Hyatt, then we went into Manhattan on the PATH, detraining at the World Trade Center stop. Tops on the agenda was going to the 9-11 Memorial (WTC), and the tickets were free with a suggested donation, which I made for us. We had to wait until 2:30 before we could get in, so time for some walking around, and lunch at a cool diner called George's also downtown not far from there. Good authentic food "basically" from scratch, exactly what I like to find in my travels. The WTC Memorial was very moving, somber - and in good taste and remembrance - and our group was me PLUS Sausy, Rickrock (from Ohio), Criostoir (most of the day), and SpectatingLoner (lesser amount of time, work commitments). SL had to leave before we could see the Memorial, but he lives only one Borough away and he can get back easily, and he works in Manhattan. Palbert had to stay behind and recuperate from his earlier scare which thankfully wasn't anything dire after all, and he got some seriously needed rest.

We never got out of downtown Friday, but that was definitely OK anyway.

Criostoir had far more than "casual" connections with the original World Trade Center. He actually worked in one of the towers in 2001 - well above where one of the planes smashed in. He could have very easily been there before the disaster, and he "wouldn't have been here, talking to" us. It just so happened that he didn't go to work as early as he could have...which was more fate than anybody could have imagined. He found the names of some people he worked with, on the memorial panels, and it was definitely a moving event for him, and a priceless event as well.

We did considerable walking and looking at cool buildings and places such as City Hall, and some newer skyscraper with architectural "waves" in its construction (Sausy knows the name - I forgot), Woolworth Building, many other nice buildings, Wall Street, etc. I love the mix of old and new as well, and Rickrock had the same reaction as I did the first time I ever saw Wall Street (42 years ago): very surprised the street is so narrow. As I originally did, I think he expected 3 or 4 lanes of traffic in each direction.

Eventually back on the Jersey City side, we had yet more good food at City Diner. And, an invention of Criostoir's, if we see somebody who is REALLY HOT and nice looking, we say "MEANWHILE..." and the more inflected or emphatically we say it, the hotter the guy. "Meanwhile" is one of those totally innocuous words which nobody notices anybody else saying, LOL. That word was uttered by us a number of times.

There are several people who we're all hoping we can meet up with tomorrow. The day will mostly or close to entirely be spent east of The Hudson as well. I know it will be All Good whatever we do, and I hope that all of the "possibles" will manage to join with us as well, including Criostoir and SpectatingLoner who could have only portions of today with us. Indications are, too, that Palbert will be ready to be able to hang with us for at least most of the day as well, and he is going to an opera at The Met (Cosi Fan Tutti) which is a staple of his frequent trips to New York City. Well, actually more frequent when he lived much closer than he does now, I guess...

What fun!!
