Two of my extended relatives in Scotland won a charity raffle and went to Jersey City in April or May....

....their apartment view overlooked that very pier!

They were loaned the use of the raffle organiser's penthouse suite!

They were up on something like the 44th floor of a building on Hudson Street.

One of these two - couldn't tell you which.

Unfortunately it was a one-off and not open to extended relatives.

Otherwise my NY visit plans could theoretically have involved me living it up in a luxury penthouse suite. ;)

Whatever you may think of it as a land-use proposition (and I have some problems with it from that standpoint), the 9/11 memorial is an absolutely stunning piece of public art. The water goes from the names down to another level, then down again, and vanishes (you can't see where). I think what it's saying is that all these people just vanish into the beyond. It's quite moving.

^I agree -- the memorial COULDN'T be any more AWESOME than it is...

Which, for ME, is why I ABSOLUTELY WOULDN'T want to go there during a FESTIVE weekend...

My emotions would be ALL OVER the place -- and I would PROBABLY end up being somewhat in the ABYSS...

I cannot control that aspect of myself...

I have TOO MUCH empathy...

I'm SUPER GLAD to hear that YOU GUYS were able to make it work and have a FUN weekend!!! ..|

:):):)

p.s. I'm not criticizing the planning -- because I'm not sure HOW you could do a NYC Jub Meet WITHOUT going -- kind of a catch 22...

That's 77 Hudson, a 50 story development on Hudson Street... the one in the front with layered sections is the one your relatives were in winning the raffle. The back one is called 70 Greene Street.Great view of the Manhattan Skyline... love the various shades of glass used in the design from turquoise to darker blue to greenish hues. Probably the most beautiful of the residential developments that have been built here in recent years, I always love passing by and admiring it. The base is very so so but the tower is quite pretty, stylish even!

A couple from our Saturday night dinner at the Brazil Grill. I thought there was one more photo of everyone and maybe Frank has it( one of the waiters graciously took a picture including all of us, but I don't have it).

From left to right, first pic... myself, Thad1527, frankfrank, Rickrock, FPNY's longtime partner Rick
The second photo has the same order except FPNY is on the right.

One more group photo, taken in the lobby of the Grand Hyatt that palbert and frankfrank were staying... tomorrow a few last ones of some Lower Manhattan sites of interest

I was invisible in the first pic, but the gang convinced me to re-energize for the second one!

I always wish I got to meet chance1. Despite his demur here, I found him affable and a sweet guy. Kind of jealous of palbert.

Affable yes... but chance, "sweet"? Them's fightin' words!

Nope, re Brazil Grill - I don't have any pictures that the waitress took...
I meant FPNY, think it was his camera used for that picture. Sorry for the "Frank" confusion!;) I know I don't have it. :(

wait...who?...me? lemme look

i have four pics which are basically all the same, one with Rick, three with me all sitting at the table. I don't even remember the waiter taking a pic..was it the dreamy one?

Not the dreamy one... just swore I remember FDNY giving his camera to our chief waiter to get a total group pic. I wasn't even drinking anything stronger than cola that night, maybe was momentarily transported and sent back to a parallel universe where that did happen! However if that were the case, we would have done a lot more than just ogle the dreamy waiter... also a very hot bartender and the greeter was mighty hot indeed. There were a few others as well!(!)

Our code for discreetly but adamantly describing hot guy sightings, thought up by Criostoir when he first met us at Owen Grundy Park. We used the code word " meanwhile"... very generously, to say the least, mouthed throughout the weekend, particularly in description of the hotties at the Brazil Grill and at the Astoria Beer Garden in Queens!(!)

love that meanwhile thing....rick and i have a secret code that we use....

I meant that you had brought the term "meanwhile" up for us, Criostoir... knew it had to come from something!

Wondering what is FPNY and Rick's own "secret" code word!;)

All these pictures and posts remind me again of the good time we had.

Just some facts. On my round trip I drove 915 miles and used $130.00 of gas and got about 24 miles per gallon and it took me about 9 1/2 hours each way including stops for food, gas, etc. 24 miles per gallon isn't good but it's acceptable. I did get sleepy on the way home and pulled into a rest area and slept for 15 minutes and woke refreshed. My hotel bill was almost twice what I would have liked to spend, but it was still cheaper than staying on Manhattan Island. I'm really glad I went and was impressed with everyone I met, but might be reluctant to spend that much money again.

It is a big bite for a lot of people, but I do hope you do make it back this way sometime, Rick. That's the only real negative about the area, it's expensive as hell. So glad though that you did make the trip East, and it was a wonderful experience with all of you guys. The best alternative in finding a hotel stay one an afford is online hotel/vacation sites like Priceline and the one with the roaming gnome that's on the tip of my tongue!
