I'm guessing the steam trains you've posted are some sort of tourist draw, nostalgia run or something like that. Or are there still steamers in active use in South Africa?

Here are some pictures of the coolest train I've ever ridden. It's in south India and goes from the plains up into the Nilgiri hills to a hill station that used to be called Ootacamund.

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica]THE OOTACAMUND RAILWAY - Mettapalayam to Ootacamund

The narrow-gauge track of the Nilgiri's toy-train twists up through lush green coffee and tea-plantations of the Nilgiri Hills in southern India. This enchanting journey takes close to five hours to cover the 45 kms from Mettupalayam to Ootacamund (Ooty) crossing 250 bridges in enthralling scenery. Winding its way through the hills, this railway runs with a central track that engages to prevent downward slides.

The steam trains that are in use are mostly those for the tourist day trips, like the Outeniqua Choo Choo running between George and Knysna. ..|

wit_afrika/buzzj: In the late 70s I was on a boat that docked in the Cape Town harbor. I recall a slew of working steam locomotives all over the harbor area. My friend made a "I LOVE TRAINS" sign that he held aloft as we walked each day from the pier, across the train tracks, to the city center.

Judging by the pictures you have posted of the CT harbor much has changed since my visit.

Part of the working harbour has developed into the V&A Waterfront with hotels, restuarants and malls. Apparently it has so far only reached 55% of its development, so there is much more still to come.

The Chinese Garden at the botanical gardens in Montreal. Besides being a garden with plants and building you'd find in China, the display is filled with dragons, lions, birds and other characters that are actually chinese lanterns. I wish I had seen it a night time as well. It must be quite spectacular or gaudy - lol - depending on your taste)

Supposedly the "World's Largest Egg" in Winlock, Washington. That's where I grew up !oops!... and I had to pass that thing every day to get to school. They have it all painted in the colors of the American flag now though.

Taken from the top floor of the building I work in. I am so in love with where I live and work on days like today when I see such awesome beauty.

..| Great view!

I work in a light industrial area and look out on a boring car park
...and I only see that by looking past the crazy bunch of women in the next office :(

The world's biggest pineapple
Bathurst, Eastern Cape, South Africa

The world's biggest pineapple was built between 1990 and 1992. It is 0.9m taller than the similar one in Queensland, Australia. It houses a 60-seater auditorium on the ground floor, showing a 12 minute audiovisual explaining the A-Z of pineapple production.
